Yesterday, re-attached my rear NS mud flap, which had parted company with the lower edge of the bodywork. The vehicle has just turned eight years old, so it's lasted a while. S'funny as I'd had an annoying rattle for weeks, which I was convinced was something to do with the second row seats until I noticed the mud flap bracket hanging by the chassis end bolt
Anyway, the problem is clearly stress cracking of the aluminium, so my solution comprised the following: strengthen the lower edge of the wing from the diagonal stay bolt back to the rear corner with some 20 x 20 ali angle. This was bedded in Sikaflex and secured with the stay bolt and a number of pop rivets. I then re-mounted the mud flap bracket but used some pieces of 4 and 6mm thick rubber on either side to create a flexible mounting. I also used a piece of thicker ali on the inside edge of the wing to spread the load along more of the existing lip. Cost in materials about £3 plus an hour or so of faffing around. Must do the other side now before it succombs Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? No, it's a bit awkward to photograph, to be honest. Here's a little diagram of what I've done though: Click image to enlarge There are lots of ways of doing it and this was just using what I had to hand. The principle though is to ensure that the mud flap bracket isn't fixed rigidly to the wing. I hope this helps. Put working door locks into my 90 - I now no longer have to climb through the back door to open the car - how very modern!

Scene - rush hour round about at traffic lights, pulled up next to a Merc with roof down on my o/s, my window was down.
Boy in passenger seat says to me, "what's that, it's cool" and then to his dad "why can't we have one......." Say no more. BM52 |
