Suppose I had it coming
4 months old and already its corroding

Matting under both driver's and passenger side footwells is soaking, 1st to 2nd gear is still crunchy after 6000 miles and it suffers from the slow speed jitters.

A visit to the dealers is in order I think.

Just another 'usual suspect' I'm afraid.......

You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear and Land Rover has tried just that with the quality on certain items, as they are cr4p. Headlight bezels, sidesteps, front bumper, window hinge blocks, mud flap brackets, OEM A-bar brackets and wing mirror arms to name but a few. In my experience swapping out under warranty is just a 'sticking plaster fix' and the problem will undoubtedly reoccur sooner or later. I have either purchased quality after-market items or had the offending items removed and either chemically cleaned or blasted and a decent powder coating carried out for reasonable cost. (For example only £20 for a steering guard and A-bar brackets). Attention to detail is in my opinion what the Land Rover Quality Department lacks (if indeed there is such a department) and an eagle-eyed owner is much better placed to achieve the required standard of finish expected. For me I feel I am finally getting there after three years of ownership ironing out the minor issues myself. Thumbs Up

Reading that it's good to hear I will only need about three years to sort things out. We'll see what I will need to have done coming three years, but I guess I'm already prepared as I also have Caterham. That one is almost sorted out after three years of trouble. Mr. Green

Usual it may be, acceptable it is not. I would expect this on a 97 plate 300tdi, not on a 4 month old vehicle.

ive just had a new bulkhead in mine was rotten on the inside near the windscreen hinge bolts 3 years old and rusting also had
new turbo
new fuel rail
part wiring loom
accelerator pedal
brake pedal
and about 20 trips to the dealers to get things put right iv'e had land rovers for nearly 30 years learned to drive in one but im now really toying with the idea of going jap, i love land rovers but it spends more time at the dealers than on the road, my mate at the next farms got a Toyota hilux only puts oil in it when light comes on treats it like Censored and its never let him down once in fact he takes great pride in towing me back in it, All the farm guys at the auctions are leaving Land Rover in there droves cause now they are not reliable, shame how the great have fallen

Steve,

The LR dealership in Paderborn is pretty much spot on (it was 2 years ago). The Service manager was a huge LR fan and personally dealt with all Defenders that went in Thumbs Up . Never questioned a warranty claim either.

Is it just me, or is build quality getting worse rather than better? It seems to me that the peak of Defender build quality was around the end of 300 Tdi production, then it all went downhill from there and is still going! We all know that they've always corroded / rusted / generally fallen to bits over time, but to be looking like that after just a couple of months is a bit of a joke. Amazingly, I'm at 8 years old and windscreen hinge blocks are still fine (touches wood before the whole thing just falls apart on the driveway). Headlamp bezels also OK, although rear cossmember has been resprayed along with front bumper, mudflap brackets, spare wheel carrier and a sizeable section of one of the tub cappings where the paint literally just fell off one day to reveal a nice patch of rust underneath. Maybe LR take the attitude that they won't sell any more by building them properly, so it's a pointless exercise trying to sort these things out. It really wouldn't take much to sort though. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

I truly do not understand LR's attitude. The same car in production for 60 odd years and the same faults are still there!

mines going in soon for the same, I've checked the bulkhead, looks fine, it did take 3 years for the window hinges to start peeling. Also having new mud flaps and sliding window catches... so far wing mirrors are ok ...
