Wales 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Santorini Black
CV Joint wear (Title change from Front Diff on the way out?)
Occasionally, driving at slow speeds when turning right there's a loud diff type buzzing. Sounds like a swarm of Bees.

Once today, the Traction Control kicked in too. I can only assume that's due to the diff screwing the wheel speed up. Craig Rogers

It's actually different to my original explanation and now I've driven it a bit it does the following;

When turning left and the straightening up (so turning the wheel back right), it makes the "buzzing" noise and it's activated the traction control again since. Craig Rogers

That sounds more like it.

Just had a long conversation with Greeni (cheers dude) and we where talking about it possibly being the ABS system playing up. Then after discovering that the ABS sensor is in the top of the CV joint and not the hub that sort of points the finger to either the CV joint playing up or the ABS system playing up. Craig Rogers

Although, looking at the price of a genuine LR kit (which I think has the half shaft included) I think it would be cheaper to buy a new Defender! Shocked

Was looking at the Paddocks CVKIT9 ones (http://www.paddockspares.com/cvkit9-cv-joint-kit-defender-non-abs-and-abs-from-vin-la930456.html) but have a feeling that they are Britpart ones......

Any ideas on which CV to get? Craig Rogers

For slightly less than the original LR set you can buy a set of Ashcroft HD ones, much stronger and a 5 year warranty against failure. You would need their shafts too though I think so not cheap.

Still not convinced what the noise is, so I've done some recordings (cracking little Android app called ASR).

The first one is me pulling out of my driveway turning right and then straightening up. The noise starts just as the wheels are getting straight and as you can tell, it increases with wheel speed. Just as the noise starts, you can just about hear the ABS pump kicking in as the Traction Control activates.

Recording 1

This second recording is straightening up after a left hand bend. The noise is coming and going as I turn the wheel slightly to the right (noise starts) and back to the left (noise stops) then back to the right etc........

Recording 2

The noise is coming from the front, so not the transfer, gearbox or rear diff. So, the options on the table are Front diff, CV joint or ABS system.

As Greeni mentioned yesterday, it's not looking like the diff, so that leaves CV or ABS.

Not sure about the ABS as would the noise speed up with the wheel speed? So, is it a CV? Which is then confusing the ABS Sensor and activating the Traction Control?

Would love to know if anyone else recognises the sound? Craig Rogers

Yep, deffo not the Steering Guard, everything is well clear of it, however, just to put my mind to rest, I think I'll take the guard plate off tomorrow and see what happens..........

The strange thing is, I can't seem to feel any feedback from the noise. Can't feel it through the steering wheel and when it's happening, if I put my foot on the brake whilst still accelerating, nothing through the pedal either (unless the TC kicks in of course).

The other thing I've not mentioned, I took both ABS fuses out and tested (the 10amp in the dash fuse box and 30amp out of the main fuse box), it didn't change anything, noise still there, but obviously the TC didn't kick in. Craig Rogers

Check your brakes. If they are sticking the noise can change going around corners etc.

Thumbs Up I'll add it to the list of things to check, although you'd expect the noise to go/change when pressing the brake and it doesn't Craig Rogers
