Jack up the front axle and try turnig the wheels.
You should be able to localise the noise. |

There is a relation to the road speed. The noise increases in frequency when the road speed increases not the engine speed.
I will get the front up on axle stands tomorrow for a better look. PAS is a possibility though as it would make sense why there there isn't any feedback. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

Dont know how, but is it worth pulling the fuse from the ABS/TRACTION control and isolating that from your fault finding DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Aleady done that, noise stays but of course the TC doesn't kick in. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

Might be worn splines on a front drive member allowing the cv joint splines to slip within it,this would let the diff send the drive to that wheel as there is minimal resistance ,if this shaft increases speed significantly then the traction control would cut in as it thinks a wheel is spinning.Just a theory but its easy to just pop the drive members off and check them.Good luck. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Now that is a possibility. Slight movement of the cv could indeed amplify the effect as it sits on the end of the shaft. Craig Rogers

It,s not exactly unknown for Land Rover to "forget" to grease the drive members during assembly ! 2005 Td5 90 XS

Hmm....doesn't sound like any CV going I've ever had. They are normally quite distinct. The first thing you normally hear (and usually feel through the steering) is a heavy clicking sound (sensation) when on full lock and under load. This comes from the internals of the CV wearing and usually happens way before it breaks.
P.S. I'd NEVER buy a Britpart CV...EVER! Andy. |

Best thing to do is just start with the basics- don't order anything yet.
Jack and support the front axle. Take the wheels off and have a good look around at the following: Bearings Wheel speed sensors Brakes Steering. Everywhere else. I remember a while ago where a member had a bad wheel bearing where it was causing all sorts of ABS/ TC faults. Turned out that the bearing was enough to put the wheel speed sensor out and was randomly applying ABS/TC. Make sure the wheel speed sensors are correctly in place- they are known to come a little loose. It doesn't sound like it is grinding/ notchy so 'shouldn't' be CV- you normally know when a CV is going through the feedback and sound. With the steering, check the ball joints and the steering damper too. Everywhere else..... This is where having a dusty/ dirty chassis helps- just have a good nosey around for any clean spots- most likely where something has been rubbing. Glyn |

Cheers for all the help so far.
I'll be doing some spannering tomorrow evening and I'll let you all know what I find. Glyn, interesting read about the bearing knocking the speed sensor out........ Very interesting. My first thought when it started to happen was wheel bearing, but I discounted that after the first TC issue, now it's back on the list. Ok, so here's a new theory......
I had to drive it into work this morning which gave me 10 miles of country lanes to have a good listen and do a few tests; I'm edging towards the noise coming from engine drive and not from the transmission. Therefore, as mentioned before, I now suspect the PAS pump making the noise which is another reason for not getting any feedback through the steering wheel, pedals, or arse. But......why does the Traction Control kick in? Question? Am I right in thinking that the ABS/TC module takes a steering position input? I'm guessing it must do to accurately work out expected wheel speeds? If so, here's my theory...... When turning, the PAS is activating and turning the wheels. All good so far, however, it's possible that the PAS is not returning back to straight properly, however, mechanically the wheels are straight. This then confuses the ABS/TC and is not expecting both front wheels to be spinning equally.........Voila, Traction Control is activated? In a sadistic way, I'm actually enjoying this! Unfortunately ABS/TC has no link to steering.
The difference in wheel speed has to be more than you will ever get steering (for TC) or locked up (for ABS). Have you got a Nanocom that you can plug in to monitor the speed readings of each corner whilst driving? (or can you borrow one?). This will help you recognise which corner is triggering the ABS/TC. With Defenders you barely feel (feedback) anything through the steering- they are great like that when on rough roads....... not so good for fine fault finding. They might not even be related- just happened at the same time. Glyn |

That blows that theory!
I've got Torque (android App)which can output that info, so I'll give that a go too. EDIT: Actually, I don't think Torque can do that.... Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |
