Hi all, My Td5 90 has a couple of niggles as follows
ONE A sqeak/squeal coming from the rear right wheel? What could it possibly be?? I dont think its something stuck on the disc as it has been going on for ages now? TWO And somewhere on the front of the car there is a clattering/rattling noise that only appears when coasting upto traffic lights for example. Under load or accelerating there is no noise? any advice would be much appreciated |

When you find out, can you tell me what mine is Eliminate brake pad rattle by feathering the brakes, if the rattle goes, then there is your cause. Mine sounds like a loose fixing somewhere underneath but I just can't trace it, I need some of those rare things..............time and some dry weather

cheers for the replies guys. I have jacked up the rear wheel in question and there is no play at all. I have rotated the wheel and there is a slight grate -ing coming from that wheel somewhere but also there is a grate -ing coming froom the big flywheel type part where there rear prop attaches to the centre diff. Is that the handbrake??
Still very puzzling[/code] |

Is the squeak altered by road speed or bumps?
Is the front clattering noise also felt through the vehicle and very metallic, if so could be the diff. Mine made this sort of noise when at no load, accelerating and engine braking was quiet. Andy |

The squeak/grating increases in frequency the quicker you go... it appears to be coming from the bell/flywheel where the rear prop attaches to the transfer box? Is that the handbrake mechanism?
hmm the clattering noise doesnt appear through the vehcile it can only be heard when the window is down.. and sounds like the diff guard banging on the diff noise but obviously not that.. |

The clattering will be your brake pads rattling in the caliper. Try copper slip on the back of the pads and anti rattle shims.

I have an annoying rattle similar to your description, has to be driveline related. Only noticeable on over run, dip the clutch it stops. Not noticeable on acceleration. I have checked UJ's , not brake pad rattle ........ Stumped. . Did the op ever resolve this ? |

Hi Jim
Just come in from trying to find a nasty rattle/knock on my TD5. First thought was it was related to the x-brake I fitted a few weeks ago so I removed it and went for a short drive and the knock/rattle is still there. Replaced the brake and went for a drive with the centre plate off. Knock is there under load and if a rev the engine when stationary I can here a rattle from the bell housing area. My immediate thoughts are the DMF/clutch. It seems OK in low range and I have no judder on take up so am a bit mystified. Just booked it in for the end of next week to try and get it sorted - I know it is going to be expensive Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

Hello again Bob
Mine as far as I can tell only on over run. I've tried listening stationary , and get nothing only the usual clatter ! I was hoping it would be the uj's but noooooo ! My worry is the longer I leave it the more it will cost ! Push the clutch in it disappears, hence my similarity with OP. Fast approaching 98k still on original clutch so DMF could be a possability. |
