I'm doing a "straw pole" on how much more smoke/smell comes from the exhaust after decat (trying to get away with this in Germany) - any opinions most welcome Razz Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

There is no excessive smoking from removing the decat on mine, or from before fitting the decat pipe? And it has a stage 2 remap from Alive, though Gary did take the time on the remaps he has done for me to ensure no excessive smoking, this included the previous stage 1 maps I have received over the past 3 years.

Looks like I may try it then (then get it tested pre-TÜV) - Mal's pipe may find use after all Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Mal's got a pipe? Does he have some tartan slippers and a Labrador too?

Same as Lorryman here, not too much black exhaust. The usual puff at start up then it is clear. A darn sight less black than the old 200tdi used to do when it was over tweaked anyway.

So how strict are the Germans regarding vehicle modifications then?

Put it this way - decatting will void the vehicle's "Betriebserlaubnis" (permission to be driven) so you will be driving an illegal vehicle on a public highway. If you are caught, police can take the vehicle and destroy it, you can lose your license for a long time and face criminal charges. Police will inform the tax office and they will prosecute you for paying too little tax for a polluting vehicle etc. etc.

Hence, if I decat, it will be covert i.e. using Mal's hollowed out downpipe...

That being said, the police are quite reasonable and friendly here (if you don't screw with them) Laughing Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Crikey Neutral So does this go for just emissions or every after market modification?

Think the worst and you'll be half right.
I'm all for keeping dangerously modded vehicles off the roads but it can get a bit silly here...

It's fairly sensible here but the insurance side more than makes up for it. From previous comments on here from insurers "What is a Snorkel" Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes "I have checked with our team and I'm afraid we cannot off you insurance as your likely to drive though deep water" What when none of them are truely sealed out of the box & who's going to take a Puma into water up to the roof. Both centre pipe and little end box take off my 2.2 . Small performance boost , little noise differance except Darth Vader breath at 2000 rpm . Looking forward to getting the bloody DPF off when the ecu remap is ready .

Ze, I wondered whether this may help you out. These are the smoke test readings for my TD5 110. 2008 it was completely standard and in 2009 she got the remap and other mods. Not sure why the fluctuation all I can think of is it could have been a combination of a major service just before the MOT and the remap. I know last year I was pushed for time and she was MOT'd with at least 6k miles on the oils and filters, could explain the value. The other interesting thing is that my 1992 D90 produces more dirty black stuff.

2002 TD5 110

2008 - 0.75 K(1/m)
2009 - 0.16 K(1/m) - Remap and performance mods done
2010 - 1.5 K(1/m)
2011 - ???
2012 - 0.93 K(1/m)

1992 200tdi 90

2010 -1.27 K(1/m) - Mostly standard engine, slight tweak.

Many thanks - I wonder what the maximum value is? Were all your readings from the same garage/machine?
If the max value is e.g. 5 K(1/m) then that variability doesn't matter...

Cheers
