Paint for expedition roof rack
I've seen that alot of members have the official land rover roof rack and was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what paint to use for maintaining it.
I have a new 110 expedition rack on mine and the quality of finish in some areas is not the best.
There are tiny holes in the paint that need to be covered so no further erosion can take place.

Strip, dip and powdercoat is really the only cure, anything else will just be a temporary/sticking plaster fix.

Stripping and powder coating is all well and good but, in my experience, is not a long term solution unless the rack can be plated or galvanised first. I had some side steps treated like this for that very reason. However, whilst it would be a good long term solution, the whole thing is then becoming quite an expensive and time consuming undertaking.

For a quick fix, and if the areas are small and you can clean them up properly, then something like Plasticoat can be quite effective. Even something like Smoothrite can work ok, if you accept that you'll have to re-visit it occasionally. Darren

Zinc wash and repowdercoating is the best solution. However I have used Plastikote and find it easy and durable to apply and due to the quick drying time you can apply several coats in a short time. You also get a good finish with limited talent/experience.....

The main dealer is supposed to be replacing the rack and a light guard but the new one will probably be the same so wondering if I should just sort it out myself.
I would like to know if anyone else has had similar problems with these roof racks.

seems they based the accessories on the chassis so its supposed to do that sir. Rolling with laughter

Yes is the definite answer!!!!!

Swapping out under Warranty is only ever a temporary 'sticking plaster' fix. You either need to 'rework' the OEM items or swap them out yourself for after-market superior quality items. I tired very quickly of the inconvenience of booking the vehicle in, bartering with the workshop/warranty specialist just to have to revisit the issue yet again later.
Better to get it right once.....fix and forget.

As an afterthought whilst Plastikote is an excellent paint for window catches/light bezels and light guards etc. if you use your roof rack in earnest Plastikote will not be resilient enough in my opinion for 'metal on metal' knocks and abrasions, it is costly too if you are going for 'continual fixes' and touch-ups.
Would be cheaper in the long run to get it stripped and retreated properly.

Thanks for that.
Really nice job done there.
Going to get the wife to lift the rack off for me next week if the stealers don't get in touch. Laughing
Got some matt black enamel paint to fill in all the little air holes in the powder coat to starve the corrosion of air for a couple of years.
Using a very fine artists brush to pop tiny amounts of paint in the holes.
The rack is going to be used alot this year so it will get paint rub.

Off topic a fox wing will be next on the list Thumbs Up
