Strip, dip and powdercoat is really the only cure, anything else will just be a temporary/sticking plaster fix.

Stripping and powder coating is all well and good but, in my experience, is not a long term solution unless the rack can be plated or galvanised first. I had some side steps treated like this for that very reason. However, whilst it would be a good long term solution, the whole thing is then becoming quite an expensive and time consuming undertaking.
For a quick fix, and if the areas are small and you can clean them up properly, then something like Plasticoat can be quite effective. Even something like Smoothrite can work ok, if you accept that you'll have to re-visit it occasionally. The main dealer is supposed to be replacing the rack and a light guard but the new one will probably be the same so wondering if I should just sort it out myself.
I would like to know if anyone else has had similar problems with these roof racks. seems they based the accessories on the chassis so its supposed to do that sir. |

As an afterthought whilst Plastikote is an excellent paint for window catches/light bezels and light guards etc. if you use your roof rack in earnest Plastikote will not be resilient enough in my opinion for 'metal on metal' knocks and abrasions, it is costly too if you are going for 'continual fixes' and touch-ups. Would be cheaper in the long run to get it stripped and retreated properly. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Thanks for that. Really nice job done there. Going to get the wife to lift the rack off for me next week if the stealers don't get in touch. Got some matt black enamel paint to fill in all the little air holes in the powder coat to starve the corrosion of air for a couple of years. Using a very fine artists brush to pop tiny amounts of paint in the holes. The rack is going to be used alot this year so it will get paint rub. Off topic a fox wing will be next on the list |
