just wondering if anyone on here has replaced just their center section exhaust for a through pipe and put a free flow air filter in?
worth while? |

many thanks for your reply which might have no bearing on myself as you're running a td5 and me a tdci. interested in knowing whether the through pipe has made any difference in performance (smoother, better low end?) or just the noise? thanks. |

straight through mid section for me but standard filter as the stories of MAF sensor oil contamination put me off. Sound is actually nicer not louder as such but deeper and a better torque responsiveness especially in 3rd and 4th gear. All in all 100% worth it and even more so for the price.

Steve,
thanks for your thoughts on this (no other mods then?) I guess they're pretty much all the same in terms of performance but which make did you go for? |

Can't say anything about the exhaust (still too chicken to fit K9F's decat pipe) but since I dumped my RAI (LR "special") and fitted an ITG air filter (also K9F-approved) I've definitely felt a bit more "get up and go". Mind you, the state of the paper filter after 1 year was pretty appalling. I expect the best results to be felt in Summer when the air is thinnest. Not very scientific though as I did the filter and the RAI at the same time
After about 5,000 km on the ITG filter, I checked the MAF today and it's as clean as a whistle p.s. Glyn uses an ITG too Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

i have just had fitted a new decat pipe along with a new SS exhaust and larger intercooler with dramatic results in performance, especially torque. I am now considering fitting an ITG air filter as the oil contamination to the MAF would be negligible considering I can get new MAF sensors for less than £30 delivered, so it would become feasible to replace the MAF yearly as part of the routine service.

Just the straight through mid section. Mine came from E-bay for around £50 from IIRC Tamar 4x4 but on fitting it fitted but wasn't ideal so I assume designed for the TD5 really but sold for Td5 and Puma engines. That said fitted okay and been on two years now and not a single issue. On a different note as the other chaps have mentioned the MAF issue with a filter is likely to be little so it's really 50/50 imo to get one personally I can't be bothered as the difference is little I'd have though but come service time it maybe worth it. Also as they mention I'd go for ITG too. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ¥ó ®ó §ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ·ó ¬ó ³ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ³ó £ó ´ó ¿ðŸ‡®ðŸ‡ªðŸ‡ºðŸ‡¸â›½ï¸ðŸ›¢ï¸âš™ï¸ðŸ§°ðŸ’ª |

This is mine:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Defen...255e09c2f2 Actually still available and from the place I mentioned from Tamar 4x4. Yes, there are others on the market more expensive and probably higher grade SS but what difference does that make unless you fit a whole system of which you'd have the centre anyway. And also if your just replacing the centre section of the whole system then there's no real point IMO to go top end as the rest will be OE. Fitting: Is pretty straight forward but if the old one is rusty as mine was then may need to be cut off as mine did but I doubt you'll have that issue and don't be put off by that either. Also the original is pretty heavy so be careful. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ¥ó ®ó §ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ·ó ¬ó ³ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ³ó £ó ´ó ¿ðŸ‡®ðŸ‡ªðŸ‡ºðŸ‡¸â›½ï¸ðŸ›¢ï¸âš™ï¸ðŸ§°ðŸ’ª |

More importantly is your 110 running better?
I have a straight though centre pipe in my workshop.. you can try before you buy if you want to fit it. Slight performance gain, slightly louder.... nothing like mine though Air filter yes - but I would suggest a few more mods at the same time to get the full benefit Ian IRB The home of the first modified Keswick Green 90 - and the first 2.4 Puma through both the 200bhp and 550Nm barriers. www.IRBdevelopments.com www.facebook.com/irbdevelopments www.integrated316.com www.facebook.com/integrated316 |

Ian,
I've wanted to test things a little longer before commenting but since you've asked....... I would say without a doubt things are better. the injector noise I would suggest is much sharper than before (as I would expect it to be?), and more importantly I would suggest its alot more consistent too. that said I swear blind there was a period this moring coming to work when it seemed really smooth with alot less injector noise (as if a big slug of thick oil was in with the diesel) - I find it most bizzare on top of that I still get the feeling that sometimes it pick up really nicely and I can find myself swiftly getting up to 3k rpm and yet othertimes it feels reluctant / a struggle to pick up. I'm probably completely wrong but I'm gonna try disconnecting the egr for a week or two see if that makes any difference. re; the exhaust I'd be very interested in borrowing that if you don't mind. - thanks again re; the injectors I'm absolutely sure there's been an improvement |

This is a man to listen too and is good to his word. I have Ian's Stage 1 remap, decat, centre replacement, de-EGR and "free-flow" air filter on my TD5 110 and it is a completely different animal. Ultimately a much better drive all round. I am not a boy racer, but the deeper note of the exhaust is gorgeous, a real burble and a roar at full tilt that is down right delicious. Economy-wise the TD5 is slightly better than it was as standard, but feels much much less stressed especially with the Disco transfer box, almost relaxed and dare I say it refined... I am fairly sure I have had the remap now for 3 or 4 years and if I had the decision again I would do it all over again, by far and away the best mods I have done to the 110. The next step for me is a Stage 2 I think with the larger intercooler upfront. I have never had a problem with air filter oil being deposited on to my MAF sensor, although having said that if you have DIY cleaned and re-oiled it it is very easy to "over oil". Thus far I have used both ITG and K&N filters and would rate ITG as being better, just seemed to fit better in the box. If you do not fancy going for a straight through mid-section there are companies out there supplying a 1/2 way house with a "cherry bomb" box replacing the original centre box. I have not seen one however and cannot comment on their function. |

Yep they do, I have their brand new system fitted onto mine. Straight through from the turbo to the cherry bomb then straight out the rear. Sounds like a V8, burble burble. |
