Steering wheels topic.......again!!
Quick question......will the Defender steering wheel with the 'lump' in the centre fit the previous models' column, the one with two thick spokes? I think both have 48 splines but may be wrong!!! Being lazy, trying to avoid chassis number lookup.
Ta.

About the only definitive way to workout the number of splines is to take off the steering wheel and count them!!

Land Rover did have a habit of using what ever they had to hand.

And you do not have to take the wheel off before counting the splines, merely undo the nut and washer and count with the current wheel in place.

Did have an ex RAF 90 with the four spoke horrible wheel on it, I thought they had changed the column when it became the Defender and it remained the same? Spline wise I mean. Don't want to take wheel off if possible, there is an XS Leather on FB I'm interested in.
Cheers.

IIRC the older 4 spoke steering wheels are 36 spline, same as some TD5 defender and Classic RR steering wheels. Certainly my 2002 110 CSW had a 36 spline but for some reason some TD5s were sold with the 48 spline steering wheels found on the TDI Defenders.

XS wheels have been produced in both 36 spline and 48 spline.

Poverty spec 90 / 110's etc used to have 48 spline steering columns and County spec vehicles were 36 spline - this continued until 'about' 2008 when ALL steering columns became 48 spline.

Therefore a pre 2008 XS wheel will be 36 spline and will only fit County spec vehicles up to about 2005 (between 2005 and 2008 you get a complete mix and match)

Hope that helps - By the way I have a brand new take off 48 spline XS wheel for sale ....

So the 48 is the older one? Always thought it was the 36 that was the older.

Then you need to check but I will bet it's a 36 spline if a 'true' County spec ....
