You cannot set up an ad-hoc stockade with Skytag but you can set up a general stockade for a significant extra cost. For example, if I were to drive to Leeds I cannot, with Skytag, phone them up and ask that they put a 300metre stockade on until I finish shopping and alert me by text if the vehicle receives a shock or moves outside the stockade area I have defined during that time. You CAN do that with the OP's unit. I did point this out quite clearly in my post as well as stating that you could use a more limited version with Skytag. With a Skytag unit the first I would know that anything was amiss was when I returned to the car park and found the vehicle missing. Extra minutes spent getting a crime number fade into insignificance when compared to the time it might take you to realise your vehicle has gone. Re the crime number both the serial number card you get with the Skytag units and the people you talk to when you register them state that you must get a crime number first, then call Skytag. You are right Dave regarding the limitations of the geozone with Skytag but Skytag will accept your call without a crime number it just helps when they contact the police.
In the same scenario that you have outlined you would still have to phone the police and go through exactly the same process to report the crime and then try to pass the location to them (possibly off the same phone you are making the call from). Each system has its plus and minus points, I don't believe either is the better one You pays your money and makes your choice |

Hi Dobby
How's my favourite town then? Yeah - I agree - after reading davew's post again, it occurred to me to get a replacement unit (like for like) with decent battery life (clearly something's not quite right), although wired into the car it's been fine all week. I'll dig it out tomorrow. I think I should stress how powerful these inexpensive things are. If you set it to pick up vibration and detect vehicle movement: 1) If the car vibrates it sends you an SMS 2) If the car moves position it sends you another SMS telling you where it is. 3) You can then tell it to send it's position at set (even 5 second) intervals until you track it down. 2*) If you don't get an SMS saying the car has moved position you can assume it was just hit by a blind squirrel or something. Then ask it where it is and get peace of mind. Some versions also have a microphone (a good one) so you can hear what's going on inside the car and decide if it's dodgy, e.g. if your children borrow it... er, let's not go there Adding to the above, you can also tell it to alert you if it exceeds a certain speed - also useful if you suspect your offspring is a speed demon... As a non-UK resident, my options are limited (there are German companies but $$$$$$$) - I think it's a pretty good solution Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Matt,
I just ordered one, seems silly not to. Would be interested to know how you wrote the app, I have an Android phone so would need to code it myself. A nice little project for me.. Cheers Simon |

I didn't write the app (wish I could do such things) - that was davew
Simon - check which version you're getting - some only have vibration or microphone etc. (depends how much you pay, sadly). Tell someone you love them today because life is short. I have a number of these in my Defender and they are extremely accurate. They work under cover too. Hard wired with battery back up, mine have been installed since last December with no issues whatsoever.
I like that I can monitor the vehicle myself, I am in control Steve |

Matt, I ordered the one in your post, I'd been watching the same model on eBay but from another supplier at a higher price. Does that one have a microphone/vibration sensor..? Edit: I checked the spec it it appears to have the voice surveillance option... Cheers Simon |

Aha.. You were a local? Probably a lot busier than you remember, can't move for new houses and cars these days. And then of course the Para's are in toon too. Back OT; I've got one of the GPS/GSM units from dx.com. Very useful. The only problem I have is finding somewhere sensible to fit it, as my 90s a rag top. They're not waterproof though, and damp seems to knacker them. Ooh now there's an idea the scroats haven't got to yet.. Hiding nicked cars in ponds. |

It's a pretty simple app that composes the text messages for you. It stores your device phone number and password and has a button to turn on/off most of the features by composing and sending the appropriate message. For the stockade it uses the phone's current position and allows you to set the radius for the stockade. It then uses that to calculate the top/left and bottom/right coordinates and composes the message. To make it easier it displays a map view with a rectangle overlaid to show the selected area. It also shows the current accuracy of the phone's gps. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

Hi Simon There are several different models. The one I posted was the closest one I could find with English text to the one I bought in Germany but mine has both a vibration sensor and voice surveillance built in. If the UK version I posted doesn't have both, then sorry for any confusion This is the German version I bought (but mine was cheaper): http://www.ebay.de/itm/GPS-Tracker-Peilsen...20b05781b0 I've just been scouring UK eBay for exactly the same one but I can't find it - they market them differently here Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |
