Puma Intercooler Testing
A couple of us did a test run to compare the effect of an aftermarket intercooler, to see if it really does make a big difference.

We measured Air Intake temp, and also Coolant temp.

2 of the Pumas was remapped as well.

Basically, the conclusion is that an intercooler makes a big difference in the driveability of the vehicle. It makes the puma pull a lot better on uphills.
Adding a remap to that shows an even bigger difference.

For me the figures are one thing but when we did that hill I was truly amazed at the difference. That hill is quiet steep although it doesnt look like it on the video. The two 110's (I was driving the one filming) had a passenger each and the HT only had the driver.
Only problem was I was hitting the limiter very quickly, which I dont like to do too often. Laughing

Also, so you all know, we were all in 6th, someone said go over the radio and the race was on. No changing down was allowed and we all had our air conditioners on. We also had a 90 with us that has been remapped, decat, and no center silencer but he was too far ahead for the Go-pro to pick him up. Very Happy

Was great fun to drag race in our Defenders. never done that before. Laughing "Overlanding With Bruce" - Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@OverlandingwithBruce

I probably missed it but what was the ambient air temperature?

Reason I'm asking is to know whether the improvement is more due to:
a) decreased temperature of the air going into the engine (will not as significant at low temperatures), or
b) increased flow of air going into the engine (is the new intercooler much less restrictive?)
Did you have cats on?

I'm very interested as this may be my next major mod... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Ambient was measured at 31 deg C.

I never thought about air flow and you have probably hit the nail on the head. There was a difference in intake temps but not a huge difference.

I would definately hazard a guess that the biggest difference is due to the amount of air going into the combustion chamber....i can not see how around 5 deg C can make that much difference.

Ben I think you need to maybe look at cleaning out your intercooler also. (maybe come fetch my standard one and do a swop - I will help you) "Overlanding With Bruce" - Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@OverlandingwithBruce

That is a good idea!

Ben, stop the nonsense and remove that cat man! Then go get the standard intercooler from Bruce and see where you stand then! You can even do a proper clean out of the old IC to make double sure it works 100%.

Good excuse for another beer and burger Saturday!

I also think you may be wright!

When I installed my IC the first impression that I got was that the engine feels so much more "free".......it sounds like a cliche but it does seem to let the engine breath easier.

Any opinions on cleaning the IC?

Found an old document of a 200tdi mentioning service interval cleaning 80 000km
Google brought up that the disco2 TD5 also has this scheduled in the maintenance.

A lot of topics on TDCI engines as well but of course no exact data. Some mention having "half a cup" of oil in their intercoolers at 100k km, others say it was more of less clean.

Would it make sense to clean out the IC and expect something from it? I do know my piping is covered in oil and the MAP sensor is after 20K km dirty again but this is someway all logic.

Just throwing this in as i suspect someone would have experiences with this?

Smile

Yes, think I should do it! Thanks Bruce.
What will the warranty say about a de-cat?
