Ray,
it would be interesting to see how good H3 LEDs are on a side by side comparison. I'll probably be corrected, but I believe because these are spot lights, they do not have to be E marked ? You might also consider HIDs too |

I'd not actually thought about the e marking. As for hid's I think I might struggle with mounting the ballast packs as the spots are mounted on an a bar. If I get time I could try and get pics of the standard bulbs and the led for a comparison but im not sure which I need with this whole canbus thing the shop is on about

The Defender does NOT use the Canbus system to identify blown bulbs. This is why some sites talk about using a resister. A LED bulb draws much less current and would show up as a faulty bulb by the vehicles electronic system without a resistor in circuit. LANDYWATCH

Yes, just buy the most powerful LED replacement for a H3 you can find. I bought a single chip 5W Cree one in a standard bayonet fitting, which I put into the reversing light on the 90. A good improvement over the standrd 21W filament lamp, but would be disappointing if fitted to replace an H3 in a spotlight.
I'd be interested to see what LED lamp you can find that gives similar illumination to the H3 you're replacing. Pete |

Just as a bit of an aside but do I understand this correctly, if a car has a canbus system and has led replacement bulbs taking place of normal filaments then the current consumption wouldn't be any different as resistors have to be put in the system to cancel out any errors. Sorry but this electrickery goes way over my head

That's correct JWL. The vehicle that has a " Bulb out system" looks at the current draw/resistance of the bulb. A failed bulb has 0 current draw compared to a functioning system. Inserting a LED bulb into this circuit would indicate a failed bulb because it draws so little current/has a very low resistance. In order to fool the electronics then you increase the resistance of the LED bulb using a separate resistor.
That is why if you replace the indicator bulbs on the Defender with LED equivalents then the indicators flash very fast, as if 1 or more bulbs were blown. You either have to insert resisters in the circuit to compensate for the drop in current draw or replace the Indicator relays for ones that are made for LED circuits. Replacing H3 55W by LEDs....... Lots of pitfalls it seems. On top of that I am pretty sure that putting LEDs into optics which have been approved for Halogens remains completely illegal, even for driving lights.
Interesting threads I think: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=630595 http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread...inions-pls http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showth...afe-to-use http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=438232 You never actually own a Defender. I got it from eBay. But to be honest it was so long ago that it no longer shows in my history thing. However, it was from this guy and looks exactly like this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CREE-Q5-POWER-LE...564e40b7f8 Pete |
