Get a couple of 9/16th spanners and check the propshaft nuts/bolts. The nuts at the front of the rear prop are the worst culprits.

Yup - propshaft bolts are most likely. I have to tighten mine periodically. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

I have exactly the same problems with gearbox/clutch "clunk" and "notchy" gear change on my 57reg Puma CSW. Its been in and out of the dealer a few times and they say they can find nothing wrong. I can minimise the "clunk" if I slightly rev the engine prior catching the clutch, but as you say it's a bit of a delicate operation. As I have approximately 1 year of the warranty to go I have decided to give it another 6 months before taking it back for another check up. It gets pretty annoying this klong for sure.

Not possessing the appropriate sized spanners (we recently moved and as such have next to no tools!), I've tried shifting earlier and use the torque to pull me along. This actually makes it worse, and I clunk in every gear.
I usually do what Willie describes, and slightly rev before engaging the clutch - this seems to work well. Any hesitation when re-applying the pedal after a shift however usually results in a disconcerting "clunk". |

I am getting my 110 back today after it spent a week with the dealers.
This clucky-ness was one of my main complaints. They have replaced the gearbox and clutch. Will let you know if it is any better. Puma 110 sw White No extras yet. |

Why on earth can't LR admit they have an issue with transmission backlash and a dodgy Transit gearbox, rather than trying to pass it off as "characteristisc of the marque". A load of "bo****ks" if you ask me. Just trying to save a few bob with poor product development and the consequential warranty issues (poorly addressed at that!). Shame, as there is a great Defender following out there (me included), but how long it will last with current product, I shudder to think!!! There was me thinking FMC would make it better.

Who really knows where the clunk is coming from. I donīt think it is the clutch. So ruling it out, the only candidates for serious clonks are the GB or the TC. You can figure out how to proceed, unless both come with factory clunk. Anyway in my case I didn`t have any noise until I got 5000 miles on the clock.

i think this is a bit unfair on L/R! When i got my 110 in September, I became very aware that changing from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to third gears there was a noticeable clunk. After 3000 miles this had become unoticeable entirely due to me changing gears properly - i.e. taking up the slight slack that is always built in. So, I don't believe there is an issue here, you just have to address your driving to the box and engine and then you will find it ok. It's a bit like commercial vehicles really, once you have driven a van or truck for a while you get a feel for it. After 5000 miles in 3 months in my 110 puma it just gets better! I would add that after 1000 miles, I was slightly concerned ref the clunk, but not any more! I have the gear change smooth now. If you've driven Land Rovers before from their inception, you always will bed in wiith them. How may dealers have changed transmissions for little reason, I wonder.

I had all the same clunks and gratings of 1 & 2 but new gear box and it's like a dream, The difference is not comparable, Its not the same vehicle NEVER TAKE LIFE SERIOUSLY. NOBODY GETS OUT ALIVE ANYWAY
