I did mine a few thousand miles ago, can't remember the socket size and just shoved the seal back in to match the position of the old one. It hasn't started leaking yet!
That is the easy bit though, the handbrake shoes are a pain in the arse. I took mine off to clean the oil off them properly and could not get those securing spring clips back on for love nor money. I believe you can get a proper tool to do it but I had to rely on brute force and voluntary knuckle skin removal! |

Thanks. That's what I did last time but was the old seal installed far enough back last time? Who knows! 1999 Defender TD5 110

Is not polishing the area on the drive flange or replacing it as important as position?
If its damaged it will carry on leaking. Keith |

Remember to check the breather is clear before you start pulling seals out.

I did check the breather by blowing down the pipe (extended breathers fitted) and got some resistance as I released the pressure there was a slight hiss of air. This was the same for front diff & rear diff. So I suspect thats because the air can't escape?
As I had the seal. I had a go at replacing the rear output seal on the transfer case. Removed the prop shaft OK. Then had fun and games removing the cross head screw holding the drum on. I had to break out the impact driver as head was starting to round off using a normal screw driver. Removed the 30mm nut using the buzz gun. Replaced the seal but think the seal is too far in, so may have to do it again! Looking at the flange and where the seal sits, there is a raised bit on the flange, is this where the seal will (should?) site once tightened up / installed correctly? If so, is there a reason why I can't fit the seal to the flange and then put the flange and seal back in place and then tighten the nut etc? 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Hi John,
I think if you rely on the flange seating the seal, it will not seat deeply enough and pick up and fail quickly. I bought a recon box years ago for my 100" and asked the guys there about a leak I had on a transfer box, they showed how they polished the surface where the output seal runs to remove the score marks, I bought polished flanges from them and had no leaks on the box from that point on. Don't forget to lube the seal before fitting the flange in, plus IIRC there is a fibre seal in behind the flange somewhere that stops oil working down the splines. Keith |

Thanks for the reply. So, ignoring my idea about fitting the seal to the flange. How far in should the seal sit? The felt washer I didn't replace, but will get another one. A polished flange..Sounds fancy.! Does the flange get worn due to rotating within the seal? I did lube the seal before inserting. Once the leak is sorted I will replace the brake shoes, at the mo it pointless due to the leak. Hi John,
The recon guys were spinning the flange in a lathe and polishing with some fine emery cloth, and yes if its scored it will leak. The ebay kit looks superb. IIRC the seal should sit 2mm - 3mm in from the face of the box, I'll try and find my old manual in the morning Keith |
