Seal should be pressed in until it just touches circlip - if I've read the correct bit.... Keith |

Finally got around to replacing the output seal.
New seal, new felt washer, new nyloc and bit that I haven't seen before, a dust shield for the rubber seal(at least that's what I think its called), So in order from the transfer case out it goes Seal | dust shield | metal outer ring | flange | felt washer | 30mm nut | hand brake drum | prop This is the kit I got > http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251040285103?ssP...1439.l2649 and the dust shield I refer to is the one top right This time drove the seal in a couple of mm in and then installed the dust shield. A thin smear of waterproof grease to ease the insertion and also a thin smear on the dust and outer ring. Cleaned up the brake shoes (and fingers crossed, it the leak is fixed I will replace the shoes) Topped up the oil with about 250mm - 500mm of oil. Again, if all good I will drop the oil and replace with fresh Lets hope & cheers peeps 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

A feeling of I've been here before - Transfer case leaking again time for a new seal and I might as well buy a new flange kit just in-case. Just when I was about to replace the shoes, so I think I will wait and see if I fix the leak first before replacing the shoes 1999 Defender TD5 110

Is it worth trying to pressurise the case to see where exactly the oil is blowing out?

are you sure its not the felt seal behind the nut and washer
most of the time the felt seal gives up after a while , there was a recall for this and the fix is to put silicone sealer on the back of the washer then fit and tighten nut |

I have had the drum off and I can see the oil dripping from the rear output flange area. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Not sure where from exactly other than the rear seal area. So, silicone on the rear of the felt washer and install as normal? The leak has been gone since replacing the flange back in Dec 2012! 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

no sorry didn't make it very clear
fit felt washer as normal , then sealer on back of metal washer so sealer is up against the felt seal , so sealer is in between metal and felt washer ive never fitted just the felt seal always sealer as well put a reasonable amount on ,but not masses of sealer ,put metal washer on then push up tight by hand in to place making sure sealer pushes out around washer and I bit up the hole in the middle to seal around threads . wipe excess off then fit and tighten nut |

The one shown in the 7th picture from the bottom (just by the drum shoe) the small one or the bigger shiny one?

just looking at the pictures and they used to have a oil deflector mounted on the two bottom backplate holes , idea was if the seal leaked it helped keep the oil off the shoes by letting the oil run to the back plate and out side the drum
think they done away with it few years ago never noticed until now another bit of so called progress or penny pinching |
