Groaning power steering
I presume that an engine speed related groaning when steering is pointing to the imminent need for a new PAS pump?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I always thought that fell into the 'they all do that, sir' category? Mine does it occasionally when cold, but it hasn't got any worse in the nearly 18 months I've owned it, and I'm sure other Land Rovers I've owned did it too. Darren

mine does it all the time when cold.... would describe it more of a whhhhrrrrr than a groan... seems to be more prevailent when on lock to lock turning.... when it is warm however the noise goes away.....

my mechanic neighbour said its something to do with the PAS pump but i can't remeber exactly what... he didnt seem to think it was anything bad...

again a case of "ohh your land rover doesnt whrrrr"??

Sounds like air in the system to me, which could go along with being run with not enough fluid. Top up and turn steering to full lock each way. This may sort it or you may need to use the nipple on top of steering box.

Mine groans all the time when turning left at low rpm. Right is quiet. Has been that way since day 1. No leaks, no low fluids. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At 125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island.

some of the 300tdi and early td5 had groaning steering at low rpm which was to do with pipe resonance and routing apparently, there was a LR mod/tech bulletin to change the route i think (it may of replaced pipes, i cant remember now) Cheers

That's interesting, but on a 2002 it should be ok.

But if you can find that service bulletin I would check my routing of the pipe. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At 125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island.

As mine's far from a factory Td5 it won't be the recall issue (wasn't) but good pointers for others Thumbs Up  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
