Was your vehicle fitted with the battery backed alarm sounder?

Unfortunately, this doesn't help as they often cut the wires to your horn first.

In addition to adding products like suggested above, it's also good to...
Move horn from behind headlight to a different location, preferably out of site from an open bonnet.
Move ODBII connector from on top of seat box to inside seat box.
Lock seat boxes with security bolts

Again it's not going to stop a determined theif, but it may deter, slow down etc

The BBS is wholly independent of the horns and cutting the wires to the horns will not disable the BBS. The alarm will usually sound the horns and the BBS together, and knobbling the horms may stop them from sounding but won't disable the BBS.

Cutting the power to the BBS, either by cutting the wires to it, disconnecting the battery, blowing fuses, and other tricks like that, will also just cause the BBS to sound.

I have not yet heard of any case of a Puma fitted with the BBS being driven away unless the keys have been taken. If anyone knows of this happening, please let me know.

Also if anyone knows a way to disable the BBS without setting it off, please PM me (so that I can takes steps to prevent it, of course). I only know one way of getting round the BBS (which is not at all easy and I have never heard of a villain doing it - at least not yet).

For what it is worth, I would recommend taking the following steps to enhance the basic security of a Defender:-

1) Fit a BBS if you don't have one.
2) If you already have one, relocate it somewhere inaccessible and unexpected (or fit a second one)
3) Disable/move or otherwise secure the diagnostic socket
4) Protect the 10AS unit itself (eg a metal cover fastened over it with security screws)
5) Protect/duplicate/reroute the vulnerable battery connections.

It is well-nigh impossible to make a Defender impregnable, but you can with a little effort make it harder to steal than the one down the road.

Might be seen as a stupid question, but how does one know if a BBS is fitted.

Its a 2011 XS 110 utility, where do I look as it sounds like something that might be useful to have fitted if it isn't already there.

I'm sure I've read that if you disconnect the -lead from battery and the alarm sounds you've got the battery back up fitted It's good to be back from the dark side

There are several ways to establish if you have one, but it is also quite easy to be fooled into thinking you don't when in fact you do.

The easiest way is to disconnect the battery and see if it sounds, but you must wait long enough after stopping the engine for the system to be active first. If you do it straight away before the system is armed, it won't sound. If you look in the handbook it will tell you how to disconnect the battery without the BBS sounding, all you need to do is wait longer and it will sound.

It is also easy to retrofit a BBS if you don't have one.

If yours looks like a horn Round, brass and flatish then it's non battery

If it's Square and plastic then it's the BBU unit

This is the part number

LR014059

Does anybody know if it's just a straight swap?

Sorry to hear the bad news of the OP......... I hope she is back in your company soon.

As for the rest of the thread..... great ideas, and it is always good to compare security devices. BUT remember not to disclose the way the original system can be bypassed (as above). Yes you have spotted it and took action and other honest forum members also now know but there are thousands of others that don't- and this is a public forum where any thieving c**t can come and find out information.

If not too sure, stick to pm. Just my 2p worth................... Which brings me on nicely to- Why do people give their 2p when it is only a penny for your thoughts????

Sorry to hear about this and hopefully you dialling 999 so quickly after the theft will help you in its recovery. Thumbs Up
Unfortunately the Puma is easier to bypass than LR would like you to think. I can surmise from what you said they left as to how they got around to nicking it. These thief's were not amateurs and it is worrying to me now as to the amount of Pumas being stolen. The only thing I can do to stop this happening to me is to fit more physical protection in the guise of a hardcase and steering wheel disclock. Even these additional precautions can be overcome with time and if the scrots want your Puma then chances are they will get it eventually. Evil or Very Mad

The BBS can be retrofitted and can be put in a very hard place to remove/get to easily, unfortunately it is also a barsteward to fit it there in the first place. As its an open forum I'm not saying where, but instead use your imagination as to where it could be placed, the more awkward the better Wink

Me too Thumbs Up

I hope I can get a work around on the Transducer coil though? On the fitting instructions it is cable tied onto the existing loom. This should be enough as the transducer coil detector I have shows it emits a sufficient range to allow fitting of this product though I will have to make sure it starts and runs OK for at least 5 mins (passive immobiliser) before tightening the shear bolt!!!!!!
