Absolutely. You can't get better headlights and I've tried quite a few...

Drove back across the Peak District this evening in atrocious conditions and the lights were fantastic whether on main beam or dipped. No fuss, no drama, and best of all, I could actually see Bow down Dave

As I wrote before I think most of the people at L2B campsite were impressed. I wouldn't go back to standard , I had tried crystal and IPF (good quality standard headlights) with standard and upgraded bulbs before these. I have Roo lights with 100w bulbs as spots and they look yellow in comparison.

Steve, as PMd but as you've posted publicly I will do so too - I have not called you a troll but stated that it could appear that way.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Hi Martin

You stated that my actions makes me come across as a troll. If that's not accusing someone of being a troll then what is?

You also asked me to not attack using this forum anymore. Thus inferring that I had been attacking people.

Both a gross exaggeration in my personal opinion, I have done nothing in this post that wouldn't be considered normal debating.

I provided justification for my argument in the current UK legislation and also the DfT's only current public exceptions to this legislation. Yet on numerous occasions Tim accused me of having no proof.

I apologise if my comments caused any offence.

You are entitled to you opinion and its your site, but remember its also a public forum and you can't just accuse people of acting like a troll and of attacking people without justification.

Thanks

Steve

So let’s bring this to an end – either provide the written proof from the DFT that JWS headlamps are illegal when retrofitted on a Defender or leave it all alone and enjoy Def2.

SteveG,
Out of curiosity, I know that in several other EU countries, amongst which figures Germany, these Speaker 8700 and 8700EV headlamps are offered in the aftermarket as direct replacement for the original H4's and invariably all these suppliers in these EU countries confirm that they are fully roadlegal for our Defenders in their countries.
Do you mean that all those suppliers are twisting the truth then? That would be risky business, the fallout could be very high for them, even put them out of business, if numerous complaints would start to build. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Hi Eric

I have no idea about other countries, I have just been talking about the UK. I also, I did not set out to prove that the JW Speaker headlamps are illegal. I merely was looking for formal documentation to say they are legal.

Nothing more than that, no malicious intentions at all.

Cheers

Steve

To be honest no matter how I read

"Just an FYI, LED headlamp units are just as illegal as HID lamps in uk if not fitted with self levelling and washers"

I cannot find within that how you asked that question

Steve,

The UK is not the UK anymore. If a product got an approval for use in a particular EU country it immediately is EU wide approval. If a product is legal to be used in Germany, then also in the UK, or Latvia for that matter. Brussels rules these days, and overrules any individual country decisions.
That means that if what you say is correct, i.e. Speakers are not legal to replace the H4s on Defenders, all those suppliers in the other EU countries are also twisting the truth which seems a bit unlikely to me.

Rgds, Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Eric you are correct an example of this is dim dip introduced by the UK irrespective of what it said in the RVLR

In 1988, the European Commission successfully prosecuted the UK government in the European Court of Justice, arguing that the UK requirement for dim-dip was illegal under EC directives prohibiting member states from enacting vehicle lighting requirements not contained in pan-European EC directives.

This is what I have tried to expalin numerous times ECE law supercedes the UK, the RVLR is based off ECE requirements not the other way around.

Hi Tim

You seem to like taking quotes and then applying a different context to them. I provided justification behind that initial post. Current UK Vehicle lighting legislation states that it is only legal to fit filament headlamps. The only exceptions formally given by DfT to this are for new EU type approved vehicles and for retrofitting in accordance with their guidelines. As these are the only formal communications on this matter by the DfT, it justifies my initial post.

If your counter arguments that E approval trumps UK law, then retrofitting HID e approved headlamps without self levelling and washers would also be legal. This does not appear to be the case. There is also no formal communication from DfT that LED headlamps approved to ECE R112 are also accepted as an exception to the current legislation. Therefore statements that they are legal to retro fit without self levelling and washers is an assumption not fact.

That's all I was merely pointing out. No hidden agenda or malicious intent or posts. In view of this, I resent the insinuations that I was acting like a troll and attacking people. It seems bizarre that I'm accused of these actions, but its ok for you to keep posting, accusing me of having no proof, inconsistency etc etc without any comment on your behaviour.

You can have the last word as I won't post anymore.

Cheers

Steve

Do dft officers go around stopping cars and checking headlights? If its only mot stations, vosa and police officers that check cars then I think the e stamp on the lights will be fine and you won't get carted off to Guantanamo bay and your car crushed Smile
