unless you have approved headlamp levelling and washing system HIDs are illegal for on-road use

basically you have 5 choices:

1. leave standard and don't go out in the dark
2. upgrade to crystals and more hi-tech lamps (I have PIAA extreme brilliance)
3. upgrade switch - add relays and put in whatever lamps you think you can get away with (100-200-300watt)
4. LED headlamps - I would recommend you actually see some LED headlights in the dark before purchasing ... they are amazing and you can "do things" to them to make them even brighter Whistle

and the final 5th .. really depends on how much you can use your full beam - buy a Rigid Industry 40" E-Series LED Bar - awesome

the LED headlights don't need SELF levelling or washing, unlike HIDs

headlight upgrades are not cheap !

Nope... They don't unfortunately.

Bpman,

You missed the most important factor... You need a 7" lens that is type approved for a HID bulb, rather than a standard halogen bulb.. which as far as I know doesn't exist.

The LED cost to upgrade is little different to an OEM Xenon upgrade its that simple.

I was one of the early takers of the UK units and I can not praise the lamps or the customer Aftersales service that Tim and the mobile centre have offered. All of my exterior lamps are LEDs supplied by Tim.

You pays your money it's your choice Thumbs Up

Oh I'm not afraid to say as it is good or bad so had I spent what I did (they were way more then) and they were poo I would have said, do your homework first or simply as BP has said park you Defner up in these cold dark days Rolling with laughter Wink

Simple question to those who actually have LED Headlights
I was speaking to someone who has just fitted them and he said that on dipped beam their light output was amazing, but on main beam they were no better than standard bulbs and he recommended and uses aux driving lights to compliment the main beam output.
I am not knocking the lights - just want an honest answer - may need to see them working in the dark myself.
I have Tims LED 70mm lights all round and they are fantastic, and would love to complete the transition with Headlights but only if they are brighter than my upgraded 110W IPFs

Hi Gavin,

I have just fitted them to my 90 out here in the UAE and i agree with your friend, the high beam isn't that much better than the low beam, but compared to the original high beam i think it is better. Saying that, i will probably compliment mine with some better aux lights as well. I have Lightforce 140's on at the moment wired in to come on with high beam and they struggle to make much difference to the LED high beam light. When i only had the standard Defender lights on the truck the Lightforce 140's were awesome. So i guess the LED's high beam isn't too bad. I think the problem is that the low beam is so good that the high beam seems to be poor in comparison to the low beam.

I will be bringing mine back to the UK to use on the Northern lights trip next year. If you want too, you are more than welcome to come down to Devon 4x4 to see them before you buy (if you can wait that long?) I honestly couldn't say whether or not they are better than your 110W IPF's, but maybe we could do a side by side comparison in January?

Regards,

Mark
