Remember that the gauge control is via the ECU, not direct from the sensor.

had a very similar problem on a previous td5 defender
it would run for 35 miles ish temp gauge went mad followed by engine cut out then had to wait 5 min before it would restart would do anotherr 30 mls or so then same again. somewhere on the internet similar problems were reported to be caused by fuel pump relay (one of the two yellow relays approx 35mm square by 70mm high located under drivers seat) opening the relay carefully with two knives showed a lot of burning in there. new relay fitted and the problem went away but the temp gauge would occasionally not read. i am not sure whether the fuel pump relay going bad causes the temp gauge fluctuation or whether a poor earth to the under seat area causes both the relay and gauge problems. as mentioned in this thread the gauge is not connected to the sensor directly but communicates via the ecu which shares the same underseat location as the fuel pump relay and therefore probably the same earth. just running a new earth directly from the battery to the underseat box did not solve my problems; they didnt go away until i replaced the fuel pump relay but it may have been a poor earth that caused the relay failure. |

Mine went mad because it had an airlock. My first thought was to get out the wiring diagrams

Mine suffered exactly this fault, but I had a rad waiting to go in. When I hosed mine out, I got about 3 gallons of sand out of the fins. Well worth a look. |

On a trip up the M6 the needle flickered a little and then dropped back to the start of the gauge and stays there until I stop the engine and restart. Then for a bit it works and the drops back to the start as if the engine is off. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I bet it'll be your radiator,I had same prob for two years frustrating,anyway my rad sprung a leak so went to local rad specialist and I bought a new one the old one must have been 4 times heavier than new one so they pressure tested it and it turned out to be partially blocked,anyway since new rad fitted never once had a bouncing temp guage, I'm not saying you need a new rad maybe just just disconnect it and flush it out

Just out of curiosity my temp gauge always stays just below the halfway mark.. It's not a problem the thing drives like a dream I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this or if its just one of those defender mysteries.

The guage is analog up to the 'just under halfway' point, after which it becomes digital.
It will remain at the 'just under halfway' point until the temperature reaches 105°, above which it will go directly into the red and put the engine into 'limp' mode. |

Thansk for the PDF link Martin. It is different to that of the Haynes manual as its doesn't mention the other temp sensor, just the one in the hose on the cylinder head. Is there a list of the earth header locations? If I am reading the diagram correctly then the Speedometer (J101), Coolant temp guage (J103), and Fuel Gauge (J104) share an earth and also the earth for the fuel sender taps off the same wires? 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Presumably the whole gauge is digitally fed from the ECU. I used the terms to describe the action. The thing is that the ECU does not progressively move the gauge between the mid point and the max point, it moves it in one instant movement. At 100° up to 104.9° it remains at the mid point, at 105° it goes straight to the 'red'. On some occasions the gauge will go to zero instead. |
