Could not have said it better! My 2010 110DC has now 35000km, never had a problem (big problem) so far (knocking on wood!) But then again if I have it will get fixed...easily I think! And it's great fun to drive it! I live in the land of the most expensive defenders on planet earth.
It's cost no less than £120k for a 110 csw, and £75k for a commercial reg ht. So my take is, £30k, just buy it and try. If you really hate it, you can export it over here and I'll pay for the shipping From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At 125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island. |

X2.... This from Switzerland, what I think is the 3rd most expensive Defender country (after Holland where taxes are an absolute killer, at least here in Switzerland it is LR who get the premium money... You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I just spent 3 days in a £100k car on a trip to and from the Nurburg, including 12 laps, 7 of them 'hot'.
It didn't convince me buy a Porsche......I still prefer my 90. |

I think to simply cancel a definite order on the basis of issues read within a forum was a mistake and you and your Defender would not have had a happy long-lasting happy relationship as you would always be waiting for the unexpected to happen. Zag posted a couple of thousand posts prior to committing to purchase asking pertinant questions about ownership. Adequate research and reading a few of the rare positive threads such as "Just for the record - I'm loving my TDCi" may also have influenced your decision the other way perhaps? On reflection you probably made the right decision. Goodbye! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

The R380 box was/is a problem.
Don't confuse it with the current one. |

My turn we have had our 2.4 SW 110 for 3 years now and its a bloody fantastic motor yes maybe it has its little design flaws and not everyhing is perfect but everything just comes to hand and it feels just right
As for the engine or gearbox woes think of it like this anything mechanical or electrical can and will fail eventually but the engine and gearbox in the puma are ford transit derived and look at how many transits are canned and thrashed everyday to within an inch of there lives and they just keep going says it all really The puma land rovers i think are by far the best yet but if it doesnt fit in with your type of lifestyle it could be the worst car in the world to you |

I think when you are investing a lot of hard earned cash into anything and if you read lots of tales of woe then you are right to be cautious.
I cant deny that I worried about buying my Puma to me it was a lot of money for what to me is a toy, I dont need it I wanted it. Unfortunatly whatever you buy there is a risk it will fail and internet forums generally have the bad news on them not the good, it was this forum that made me decide that it didnt matter and buying the 90 was ok. I figured it like this. 1/ Ive got 3 years warranty and 6 years anti corrosion 2/ I will Zag it (keep the corrosion at bay) 3/ When its out of warranty (and ive finished paying Santander for the money they lent me) I can service it myself to ensure its done correctly 4/ Most jobs can still be done by the home mechanic with a good tool set 5/ If it goes wrong some kind sole on this forum will know the fix and if its beyond my skill level they will also recommend someone whom can help without ripping me off 6/ As its been made since 2007 bit will get cheaper (gearboxes are now about £700 new take off on e/bay and used ones are about £500) engines circa £1500 Yes they can have issues I will be going to the dealers for my recall next week and have a short list of things I want them to look at Do I regret buying it ? not for a second, I forgive it its slight issues, its not great build quality, etc etc. It has become one of the family, its like a like pet, one of those dogs that are old whilst they are still young and hence its named George and it goes on holiday with us. I also figure that if I look after it, and I end up having to sell it I wont loose too much money but loosing it is not in my plans DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

To BSA627.... Look at it from the bright side, you gave the chance to someone else to grab it and to really enjoy it with all the good and less good things that come along with it. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

They are great vehicles - but like TVRs or other hand built vehicles there is an amount of build tolerance and design features. If this worries you maybe you should be looking at a Japanese model or maybe a Merc G Wagon ? I've had my 110 (2010) from new, i've had a new heated rear window, a couple of recalls - and that's about it. Alternatively my 17 year old 90 has had a clutch, a radiator, rebuilt the front axle, seat runners, throttle cable and lots of other bits and bobs - but hey - it's 17 ! How many other makes do you see running around that are 17 ! Buy it and enjoy it ! |

K9F - nicely put
LR90XS2011 - nicely written , but you call it George bpman - you forgot to mention 17 years old and also used on and OFF ROAD and still going strong. More than every a Defender seems to becoming the latest 'must have', maybe it has been for a while but certainly I've noticed more and more lately the craze for the iconic off roader. Maybe it's the press coverage of the anniversaries of various models, 60 years for the Series One's, 40 years of Range Rover, Land Rovers in action in the Middle East, news that the current shape is coming to an end so get one while you can etc. Or possibly (according to the age group poll thingy on here) most of us are at the age where going off on an expedition with the family is within reach and a Defender is seen as the vehicle of choice. Plus it's a hobby, we can buy things, bolt them on, it's takes most of us back to our mecchano days of building something unrecognisable from pieces of metal strip ! What ever it is its great fun. A Land Rover has its faults, it is not a BMW ZXM 13567, a Merc CLKMLA or even a Kia CEE'D it's a utility vehicle, a tractor albeit a refined tractor. It's not designed as a Chelsea Tractor or a long distance cruiser up the motorway. Yes it will do it but don't expect to jump in and drive it without some mechanical sympathy. I would suggest most Defender owners have an understanding, not in depth, but maybe a little knowledge of the gearbox syncromesh, constant velocity joints, PTO, EGR valves, wading plugs, axle breathers, how a basic 12v relay works, Ohms Law, the need for the right size cable for the amperage carried. They possibly enjoy camping, have an in depth knowledge of the latest 12v fridge, roof tent, ground tent, trailer. Possibly don't enjoy camping but enjoy green laning, pay and play day. Long for, hope for, wish for, plan for a long distance adventure to some far off mountain range with a bunch of like minded buffoons. Gearboxes break, not many but some, vehicles rust, mines 5 years old and I can honestly say there's not much if any rust at the moment (waxoyled, oiled, greased and painted). There we go again owner participation, I certainly wouldn't get a paint brush out on a BMW, Merc or normal daily drive vehicle. Should I have too grease, paint, oil, yes because it's used and abused, on and off road. Electrics can play up, radios fall out (off road !), water can get in, heater is adequate ish, side windows steam up, wing mirrors are not electric, no parking sensors, no rear view cameras, no adjustable lumbar supports, no air bags, side bags, door bags. It is what it is - a utility vehicle. If you research any other vehicle and subscribe to a forum you'll probably find most makes have issues of sorts. Toyota has had a number of recalls in the last few years. Merc ML's were recalled in the US for something serious a couple of years ago (forget what it was for). Land Rover probably pull their hair out every time a Defender is returned because the owner has heard a squeak or a rattle that wasn't there 10000 miles ago! Defenders are quirky, noisy, uncomfortable but they get under your skin, become part of the family and are great fun. Looked after they will give many years of service. Buy one, don't worry too much about its issues and use it for what it was meant for, take it for what it is and you'll love it 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top Last edited by Landlord on 4th Nov 2012 5:51pm.
