Nice. Ok, added the list of things to check tonight in preparation for Salisbury. And for check afterwards too. Just realised I've not got around to ordering diff guards for the 'fender , although I have plonked a sump/steering guard on there. Hmmmm.... Ah well, it's Mrs Do$h's car, not mine I'm guessing the chances of pranging a diff casing in the mud and flint of Salisbury plain is pretty slim unless I stray onto a live range 54 Freelander modded for mud 2008 D3 SE 2010 90 XS SW 1978 88 Series 3 undergoing surgery with a new owner 2007 90 County Truck Cab - gone 2006 D3 SE - gone 2004 Freelander Sport - gay 1999 Disco V8 ES rotted to bits |

Spoke to the dealership today and asked what a new sump would cost. Expected something rediculous and so it was, £39 or so, the whole job including labour can be done for about £110.00, so its booked in for next Thursday, no more doubts about dumping all the oil.
About the dif guard, on a technical point, I was told that the guard is not to stop the diff being broken it is to stop compression of the casing causing the moving parts to rub on the inside and creating a nice iron filing paste to increase wear. Whats broken now ? |

I too took the tech bulletin into my dealer here in Brisbane, Australia - they eventually agreed to change the sump pan even though it didn't have witness marks. For any Australian readers here - if your dealer is reluctant to change the sump pan - ask them to contact LR technical and explain that you are planning some remote hard core driving - they fix it then! Cheaper than a 2000 odd km recovery. |

Had the invoice for the new sump, £123.83 inc vat. Money well spent, I thought, until I read in LRO that the problem is only applicable to left hand drive models. Still its done now and not something to woory about. Have just returned from a 1000 mile round trip to The Ultimate and a good amount of off road work, and the old girl got me home with no real problems. ABS and TC lights stayed on a couple of times, but turn ignition off and back on and they cleared. Whats broken now ?

It's more prevalent in LHD models - but there has been at least one case of a RHD vehicle holing the sump too (from the cross axle issue). |

Had the sump changed a few weeks ago on the back of this very helpful posting. My driveway's been oily ever since . In brief, the vehicle's been back two times with the sump gasket being changed. Drove home to-night, parked up, and it's still leaking.
The leak is dripping from the rear of the sump area. I've checked the engine oil level on the last two occasions, and it seems to be very full - - above the max level on the dip stick. So; question - - - is it possible the dealership is just incompetent it properly fitting an oil tight sump / gasket. OR, is there something else going on (is the oil capacity the same with the new sump / if they're over filling with oil, will it cause a problem?) Apologies for the basic nature of the question. I'm not that technical , and yet I'm trying to help the dealerships techs achieve a happy customer via an oil tight sump Any thought's on this would be very welcome. Cheers |

Softail - do you have any idea what triggered the sump problem in the first place (eg off-roading) or was it a random event?

Hi Rick, in essence, there wasn't really a problem to start with! The dealership changed the sump as per the technical bulleting above on this thread. They agreed to do this as part of the deal in me purchasing a 6 month old vehicle. So the experience of the oil leak has only been since the sump change.
The reason for my question below, is that I'm finding it hard to believe a dealership can find it so difficult to change a sump, and achieve an oil tight outcome! Thoughts anyone? |
