I'll bet there are lots of defender owners that still 'make do' with the standard LR radio-cassette and the 2 standard speakers pointing at their knees!
I upgraded to a Sony bluetooth head unit not long after I got my 90 (5 years ago), I don't have any pics of the install but I do remember that Halfords stocked a selection of 'OE to generic' patch leads for ICE installation, the Td5 required a BMW patch lead since it was designed and built in that era (02MY). When it came to speakers, I initially replaced the front pair with 4-inch ones from Maplins, but these have since been replaced again with Alpine units. It still left most of the sound directed at my knees (I blew the maplins having the volume too high to try hear it over the engine) so I decided to fit additional speakers in the rear. As my 90 was originally a hard-top it had no wiring or enclosures, so I added the wiring from the Halfords loom adapter, through the grommet into the engine bay, then down to the chassis rails and along to the rear of the truck and in through the same grommet as the rear lighting. I handbuilt some enclosures for the rear corners, you can get Land Rover enclosures to fit a second pair of 4in speakers here but these looked flimsy and limited the size of speaker. My enclosures were made from 9mm ply to cope with any knocks from anything I might be carrying, and the reason I settled for the bottom corner is if I ever remove the hard-top for a soft-top (or to go topless!) I retain the second speakers. The speakers I have here are from Maplins and they cope fine for my needs. Nearside:  Click image to enlarge Offside: Click image to enlarge For web browsing functionality I use an old (but still perfectly functional) iBook G4 laptop with a 3 PAYG MiFi, allows me to access the internet anywhere and turns the truck into my own personal wireless hotspot  I also have a 600w invertor for charging the laptop battery, with a standard domestic surge-protector to protect the charger from spikes. I've never used the laptop to play dvd's in the car, but the aux in I could do this quite easily if I wanted to. Mark S

I upgraded to Hertz speakers all round plus an extra pair in the doors (doors packed with material to reduce vibration). Alpine head unit (Bluetooth etc) and an Alpine sub that sits in the back.

Killer - Let me guess what brands you'll be after
Driver - Yes I agree I have the LR plastic rear panels myself nothing wrong with them I find and look factory but do limit speaker size. Could be enlarged though with a Dremel or similar but I simply wanted a 10cm in there anyway so suited me just fine ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ |

Interesting to see door card mounted speakers too. Never thought of that as an option for myself as for me that area in the winter would simply be too muddy and wet for anything to go there. With the Bluetooth built in systems where is the microphone mounted? ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ |

I have a 110 Doublecab - and there is very little space for traditional sub woofers behind the rear seat.
I bought an Alpine 'under seat' speaker which is about the same size as a phone book - so I was not expecting much out of it! However, I'm truly impressed with both the sound quality and amplitude it's capable of. I replaced the LR under dash speakers with Alpine ones about the same size and all together I rate the sound pretty highly for a defender without spending a huge amount of money! Si |

When its light tomorrow I will go and get some pictures but here is what I have so far.
Alpine head unit in the normal landy position, bluetooth microphone run throught the dash and up the a pillar, ipod lead runs down through the dash under the matting and into the cubby box to keep the ipod neatly away. I then have all the wires run through the bulkhead down through the engine bay and into the battery box where I have a Genesis Profile 4 amplifier mounted. This powers a set of Rainbow DL-C4.2 component speakers which have the midbase in the stock landrover positions and the tweeters sat in the top of the dash aiming at the windscreen to bring the soundstage up. It sounds pretty good but I need some low end so I think I'm going to add a shallow sub somewhere too to fill in the lower frequencies. |
