Hydronic d4W Block heater/night heater TD5
Where do I start?

I have just been given a Eberspacher D4 water heater complete with cable salad and pipes.

Having been all over the net and got lots of ways to fit this thing to VW's even on a RHD Landy.

But I have a left hooker 2002 110 TD5.

Just to make it worse I have already a 4Kw heater mounted parrallel under the cubybox connected to the water system to keep the kids from freezing in the back.
The questions are:

If I take the input from the below the thermostat then I will be only heating the cabin heating for a given time as this is a priority of the TD5 as the temp goes up eventually the thermostat lets more through between the engine and the cooler at the front.

Or

If I tap into the main water pipes for the cooling system then it will heat the engine first, then go onto the cabin.

I live half way up a mountain in Switzerland and last year we had -23deg for three weeks. Normal winter outside temp is about -15deg. No shelter from prevailing wind.

In winter I have a 10 minute drive down hill to the village, so the motor dosen't even heat up until I drive back.
I have made my own rad muff. That helps but as the TD5 rad is over dimentioned for winter I still cant get much heat out of the system both to save and help the engine and to preheat the cabin.

The cooling system is in good order and the heating controls work correctly.

Mains power is also not a problem in winter (Car is parked right infront of house) but really I would like to use the Hydronic d4 for the future when camping.

I'd like to be able to heat the engine first and then the cabin heater. Or the cabin separate to the block when camping?



Will post pics of 4Kw cabin heater and system later.

Up for discussion and any ideas?

i would set up a test rig and make sure the unit works ok.

is it new or old ?

if it's old, get a service kit for it.

location of the unit, might also be worth having a word with the Swiss Land Rover Club, they must have other members with LHD models

Hi bpman
I am a member of LRoS.

The unit works I have tested it out myself it's dated 99, but it has only been used about three times.
The location of the unit would be between the Motor and the LH side wing and as long as it is below the expansion bottle it will be ok.

My biggest problem is the shunting between the different volume supply pipes/ main cooling pipes or cabin pipes.

As I said I have looked all over the net.

I can't really help as I have a webasto block heater.

Webasto CH were really helpful (I have a LHD Puma).

I can't remember the layout of the td5 engine bay.

Once you can find the fuel feed, electrical feeds you are 70% there.

the other heater you have to warm the children, is that just an air heater ?

perhaps you can take a diesel feed from that unit ?

the webasto fits into the pipes that feed the cars internal radiator then passed back into the engine and front radiator

there are lots of reducing pipes, one-way values etc available for these installs.

perhaps give Eberspacher CH a call and find out if they make a land rover kit ?

The other heater is like the landrover heater but a lot more efficient.
It draws water from the cabin suppy water pipes and uses that through a matrix, then has a double blower mounted on it to blow the air through.

I'll give Eberspacher a call and see what they suggest.

i think a puma would benifit from a rear blow air heater fed off the engine supply. The front get real hot but i have noticed the rear doesn't.

Well Eberspacher Switzerland were really helpful with my problem!
"Erm sorry we dont know how to connect the pipes up!!!"

So I 'm back to the drawing board!

Anybody got any clues as to where to put this heater into the pipework on a 110 TD5?

Coo nobody else fit a Hydronic D4 W to their TD5?

basically in the flow and return to the heater.webasto UK only has installation infor on td5 defenders...according to my local dealer they don't fit a puma Rolling Eyes

These are the same info that I found. Only on Webasto heaters.
I think as I have bench tested the rig and it works great with a washing up bowl of water to 66 deg and stops and starts ok with out to much smoke. I'll give it a go!

I'll try and do some sort of write up as I go.

thats what i've done with my thermo top Z. You gotta test it out first. then mount the unit, connect the water system,connect the fuel system and fit the loom.

Does it work that the blue part can separate the water from the engine?
In other words that you can cabin heat only or both at the same time?

I want to do this with a TD5 second heater under the cubbybox.
If I have read this right, then I could use this part to heat just the cabin when the motor is switched off.
For example in a car park waiting for kids from skiing.
Over night with both switched on to heat cabin and engine?
