I hear a pretty loud 'crack' or 'pop' from the rear if I lift off, or reapply the accelerator with anything less than smoothness.
A rough or sudden reversal of the accelerate/decelerate momentum will induce the noise. It only does once in each direction. By that I mean if I set off fast from traffic lights, it will make the noise. If I decelerate gently, then repeat the fast start it will NOT make the noise. If I accelerate gently it will not make the noise, but if I lift off the accelerator suddenly, it will. Then it will do it on the next acceleration. So whatever it is, its not something very loose, it obviously takes some force to move it and make the noise. It was only doing it very occasionally until recently, now its got much more frequent. I hope you understand this, its quite hard to describe! 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

Sounds like A frame ball joint.
Also, check radius arm bushes. ![]() |

Thanks for that. I have tried to lever the radius arm bushes with a jemmy bar and the only movement is in the rubber flexing, so A frame joint seems like the culprit.
Is it normal practice to replace the whole A complete with ball joint and pivot bushes? or will it just be the ball joint itself that's worn? Car has only done 50k miles, 52 plate. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

Probably the ball joint, get a jemmy on that too.....
Check your UJ's too (not with the jemmy) ![]() |

Could also be drive flanges, or pinion wearing on the splines if not the ball joint, or prop uj's.
