Hmmmm, Wonder if the mech is gone it's really hard too tell. A multimeter should tell all electrically speaking other than that it's only mechanical that could have gone wrong which is un-likely. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Right guys, all you that said it would be a broken wire was spot on i cut the rubber sleeve and the red was Broken in half and the blue was on its way..... thanks to everyone for your help and advice it was spot on..

THIS has been a life saver of a thread.
I drove to Screwfix, wound down the drivers window on the way there and when I arrived the window would not work! I did a search, found this thread but I did not want to cut the rubber sleeve first off, so I checked all the fuses - FINE, then I took out the dash to remove and check the switches - FINE, then I took the door card off to check the power to drivers window motor - NOT FINE. Finally I relented and cut the rubber sleeve and hey presto, and broken red wire and partially broken blue wire! Many thanks! 2007 Defender 90 XS 2022 Defender D300 HSE X-Dynamic |

The drivers side window stopped working on mine this week also. Assuming it is the wore broken in the A pillar to door conduit, what is the recommended best way to prepare (other than stripping the complete wire from the harness and replacing), solder crimps and heatshrink

You don't need to cut the rubber boot. I just unclip it from each end and pull it back and forth to find broken wire. Then cut wire and strip, solder in new good quality wire with heat shrink over joints. I extend wire, so that both joints are hidden, one in A post other in door, so joint does not get flexed.

I should also mention that I had a non working window but all the fuses, switches and wires checked out ok. It was a sticky mechanism stopping it. After greasing and lubing it all, it works fine. I also then removed other door card and lubed it to prevent a future problem. It cost nothing except a bit of my time, some new card clips and gaffer tape to repair the damp membrane. (I think it is easier to cut and repair the membrane than remove it and deal with all their sticky chewing gum stuff)

Great thread - mine stopped working suddenly yesterday (is it always a hot afternoon when it happens? )
Anyway, fuses are ok, but a wire has broken inside the rubber sleeve - got one end exposed, but the other end is inside the sleeve somewhere - do I really need to cut the rubber sleeve to get at it? If I pull out the rubber sleeve of the door card (door card remaining on ideally - having repaired the door card clips in the past) will it go back in ok, afterwards?! Chivers no need to cut, you can tape the end of the replacement cable to a long screwdriver and gently manipulte the new cable through the rubber boot umbilical and then terminate/splice the new cable to the old and then pull it back through the boot again so the repair is in the boot. Or you can terminate/splice the new cable in outside each end of the boot. When I sorted Rustyboxx's I used the end of a fibreglass cable rod to pull through but then again I'm a sparky and have them at home. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
