That is not bad consumption for city work. The consumption you are getting for freeway driving is what I get in the city. The only explanation I can give for the difference could be explained by the Defender's aerodynamic coefficient that approaches that of a streamlined brickwall. More effort required to push it through the air at higher speeds. Mahn '08 Defender 110 ex '95 Disco 300 Tdi www.aulro.com |

Yes - mine does a good 30mpg+ on minor roads, short stop-start journeys, and more like 28mpg on the motorway at a steady 70mph! This is the opposite of what I expected too (especially with the 6th gear) - my V8 petrol was 17mpg on the local roads, 21mpg on the motorway. The aerodynamics certainly come into it at higher speeds, but doesn't explain why my previous defender was the opposite? Both are high-geared at the top... |

Mines the same on my regular run up to aberdeen at a steady and sedate 70-80mph i got 26mpg on the last two runs, but seem to get more running local around N yorks. I to thought aerodynamics and higher revs. Certainly uses more when the winds in the wrong direction, makes quite a difference over 320 miles.
Overall though I'm certainly getting more MPG than the D3, about the same on a long run but much more around town / local. But then again I didn't buy a Defender for fuel economy and count the cost of extra juice as part and parcel of my enjoyment. Original Member Pie n Pea Club. 110 HCPU Tipper |

Mine's the same - getting near 30mpg from a 110 on backroads, local trips, etc and drops to 26 to 28 on long motorway journeys. The more m'way work, the worse the consumption.
I've started changing up at higher revs generally and this has improved the fuel consumption on short trips - maybe the combination of higher revs but less load on the engine reduces the work done by the turbo? My old Td5 was more economical on motorways, possibly because the engine was spinning faster and relying less on developing torque at lower revs to keep pushing through the air? As a side issue, I found the pump I'd pulled up by in a very busy Shell station was delivering only their expensive 'I can't believe it's not liquid gold' diesel. Unable to reverse and find a standard diesel pump, I handed over the extra 7p per litre and gritted my teeth. Was it my imagination, or was the engine far more smooth, powerful and refined? Didn't quite get my 7% back in improved fuel consumption, but the driving experience almost made it worthwhile - anyone else used this fuel, either deliberately or by accident? 1953 80 1965 Alfa Romeo GT Veloce Sprint 1980 Fiat 124 Spider 2008 110xs |

I'm inclined to agree that BP ultimate etc seem to make the engine quieter and feel more responsive, but this seems to make zero difference to the fuel consumption.
My XS DoubleCab has averaged 24.75 mpg over 13,000 miles. Best almost 30mpg (driving at less than 60mph), average 25 (70-80 on the motorway and driving normally without considering fuel consumption), and about 19-20 towing flatout (between 65-75mph 1.5 tonne trailer). see below |

@ top speed of 100km/h yielded 29.4 mpg. Over that (120 km/h), it goes down to 25.4 mpg. Puma 110" SW

Took my car in for a 10,000km service yesterday.
Apparently there was a software update that has noticeably improved the mid-range. Seems to pull much better from 80-120km/h (speedo indicated). Hopefully may improve freeway consumption. Dave. |

Good to know that I'm not the only person that tracks my fuel con on an excel spreadsheet…………
Again, in agreement with the general view here - I get the good side of 30 mpg if I avoid the motorway, but typically 27 mpg with some motorway usage. Like Ads90, the V8 50th I had previously was 17 ish mpg running around and 20 mpg on the motorway. Greg Currently: 2013 90 2.2 Puma Base Station Wagon 1991 90 Tdi 2015 Discovery Sport 2.2 |

Ive been told by my local dealers that the software update has been put on hold because its causing more problems than its solving?? Oh, and regards fuel consumption im getting approx 25mpg on motorway runs! but i am running 35x12.50 mud terrains. |

Best I got with the Puma Tdci 110 is 30.45 mpg. on a recent holiday. Wife and two kids with enough cargo to fill an aircraft carrier. (three females, enough said). Funnily enough this was not cruising in sixth gear but on minor roads mainly in 4th gear. Does not do near as well when cruising at 100 kmh(60 mph). 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

60mph is too quick for good economy - try low 50's if you want decent mpg.....
talking of which my mpg seems to have dropped off. I'm struggling at the moment get much over 400miles before the orange light comes on. ok so I might be going a little quicker but to my mind it's dropped off more than the slight increase in speed I might now be undertaking. My obvious thought goes to the MAF sensor but just wondering if there's any other tell tales when the MAF goes up the shoot? |
