Rust - warranty question
I have spotted some areas of rust along the bottom of the door inners on my 110USW.

This is the same on both sides, the door seal up the angled part of the door has rubbed through and caused rust to come though, you can see in the photos. Would this be covered on warranty?

It surely should be. I had once rust traces at all 4 door rubbers, luckily it had not relly spread to the body yet, but the dealer took care of it without discussion. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I have just emailed my local(ish) dealer to see what they think. I can't stand the idea of a 12/13 month old vehicle rusting already...

"to see what they think" Shocked

Don't be too nice with those guys. I have learned that the firm approach works much better. You confront them with the issue, put them with their nose on the facts, and all such rust is clearly covered by the factory rust warranty the first three years (thereafter it is only perforating rust til 6 years).

Don't accept any half measures in your first three years. You can always complain to LR UK first, if that does not help to whatever you have in the UK as consumer organization. Or more, but hope you will not have to resort to that. Good luck Thumbs Up You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Odd, These parts are galv on my 2009 ninety... whereas they seem just painted on the pics.

Did they change that recently or is it different on the oneten's?

The pictures look like the rear doors, so would be very different to you 90... Darren

Yes its the rear doors. From what I can see, the door compresses the seal too much and then rubs, ruining the seal and rubbing the paint off the panel. Wish it was galv, wouldn't be so worried then...

Yep, still useful to see what people have experienced though, as there seems to be some variation dealer to dealer.

That's nothing to whats corroding away beneath your cappings Dan Shocked They will be rusty from new, hope you have treated them Thumbs Up Bit of Ku-rust or similar e.g. ACF-50 on those rusty bits pictured, will take 5 mins, job done and put something between whats rubbing on the metal because the dealer won't and it will be back in again in 3 weeks time Rolling Eyes

I can't see any rust on them. Do you mean the cappings themselves?
Dealer can repaint them and give me some new seals I think (only right?) and then I'll see what I can do. Its just cack design yet again...

I had both cappings stripped, treated and repainted 12 months ago under warranty. 12 months later the rot has returned and I have bubbling paintwork. Initially Westover Land Rover stated that paintwork has a three year warranty and I wouldn't be covered. I then sprung the fact that their bodyshop had done the rework once already less than 12 months ago and the paint would not be bubbling were it not for the fact the capping is rotting from within. Well I then visited their workshop and spoke with Steve the manager. They are very tied by Land Rover by what they are and are not allowed to do with regards to an effective repair. Several things sprung to mind, the rust treatment they use is automotive and rubbish, by shamfering off the sharp edges and possibly filling after treatment the paint would have more to adhere to, the air, moisture and dirt wouldn't get in and hopefully the repair will last a bit longer. Whilst not wishing to sound smug or explain to him how to do his job we have 'reached a compromise' where I shall supply the rust treatment, he will do a more effective repair and I shall pay a 'goodwill jesture' for getting it done right! I like compromise.....especially where both provider and customer are happy. Pinched your picture Zag....Thank you.

90s tended to get galvanised sill members. 110 station wagons have the sill members as part of the larger sill/B/C pillar assembly (A.K.A. body side frame) which is not galvanised and rots like a ****!

This may be a stupid question but what would happen to a bit of rust like that if it is kept clean and dry under sealant e.g. under stainless door sills. I read somewhere that it might keep rusting but it's hard to believe... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...
