The Puma has developed another oil leak which now makes it leak number 3. The first was the transfer case bottom plate, second was the rear pinion seal and now it looks like I have a leak on the gearbox.
The oil is dripping off the transfer case but given this has been happening for a while and the transfer case level isn't changing I suspect it's actually coming from the gear box. So is the gearbox oil level like any other normal level? i.e. if it dribbles out the filler hole it is considered full Of course the next issue is how do I get hold of Castrol BOT 130 M (Ford Code: WSD-M2C200-C, LR p/n: LR006519) in the middle of bloody nowhere if the level is low? Interestingly this is a 75W-90 fully synthetic as is Syntrax (Transfer case) but this is a different spec according to Castrol. 110 2.4TDCi 110 300Tdi LROCV ::: AULRO.com |

You can use any 75w/90 but has to be GL-4, not GL-5. Puma 110" SW

Thanks, I have access to the GTR pages on the Transmission so I have the details. But nowhere does it say anything thatn to fill with the specified amount of oil.
I'm hesitant to undo the Gearbox filler as yet just in cae it starts to weap as I believe it also has a thread sealant on it. I've also rechecked the transfer case tonight and just added 100mL of Syntrax (that's the correct stuff) to it. So I'm hoping this weap is only the transfercase after all. In Broome now so I can access some more knowledge as there is a LR repair place in town (I believe) 110 2.4TDCi 110 300Tdi LROCV ::: AULRO.com |

I looked all through and have to agree level checking is forgotten.
Its no different to the old though, so same technique surely applies Mike |

Land Rover should talk to people like you who actually use the vehicle as it was to be designed to be used. They could get all the feedback they need on potential problems and design faults in components. Think how much they would save in R and D. Ride on. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Don't laugh, the thought did enter my mind As for R&D LR in Australia is like every other 4WD maker and thinks only suburban soccer mum's and rich business gits need Chelsea Tractors so they can dream of being capable to go off-road in the great outdoors. That's why there's only about 3 or 4 remote regional dealers left in the entire country and nolonger any remote service agents. 110 2.4TDCi 110 300Tdi LROCV ::: AULRO.com |

No offence ment with my earlier quip. I am well aware that what can be an "annoying problem" over here i.e. a leaking gearbox has the potential to be nothing short of catastrophic for someone like you. At least in earlier handbooks such as for the series Land Rovers or the Tdi models it gave comprehensive instructions on how to check and top up gearboxes and other components. It is a lot easier to refer to a handbook than to go on the net to get info from Land Rover, especially when you are going off the beaten track like you. I think Land Rover ought to go back to the older information laden handbook of old. Not a whole lot of people will want to use it but at least it is there for those who need it.
If Land Rover had the sense they would take your vehicle from you after your trip, strip it and see how different components performed during it and what improvements, (if any) were necessary to make the vehicle perform as it was designed to do. You of course would need to be issued with a replacement vehicle. Think of the information they would garner from an exercise such as this. In no time at all we would have the vehicle that Land Rover can and should be making. It would be cheap at the price for the benefits they would accrue. Probably one of those things that should happen but never will. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Tip
mine was leaking after a couple of km (2000 ish). Tooked it to the dealer and he said the gearbox was with an excess of 1 litre, so the oil started to come out through the breather pipe. God knows why there was so much oil! Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |
