I need to replace the very small light bulb illuminating the red triangle in the distress lights switch in the middle of the Puma dash.
So need to remove the center dash panel, for this have to unscrew the two bolts left and right with an allen key, and then the dash should unclip starting at the top. A question, what about the radio? Can I leave that in place and will it come forward together with the center dash cover, or do I have to take the radio out first? You never actually own a Defender. Wait a moment!
Are you sure you need to change the bulb? I don't think it lights up the way you would expect it to - there have been some posts about this

Like BP mentioned however I started from the bottom myself not the top. Just be gentle but forceful enough to remove it taking care not to leave marks or damage. There is lot's of pictures in my gallery

Yes, the bulb burned out. The amazing thing is that Land Rover do not have this bulb as a specific partnbr in their database, so my dealers tried to get away with some poopoo talk, like that switch has no bulb, later they even said, yes there is a bulb, but there are no wires connecting it, and they went as far as checking some 2nd hand Defender to be able to reconfirm that the switch in that one also remained unlit...... Until I showed them a bit later in a brand new Defender in their showroom that the red triangle in the switch does light up when you turn on the lights. So in the end someone on the forum here (would have to go and find that old post) was kind enough to give me the part number and the suggestion to order it from Rimmer Bros. Which I did, have several spares now for the future. If I have to take the radio out, I think I will leave it til next visit to Autobritt dealers. Not sure about how to remove that fancy radio in the SVX, and Steve, good point about the radio code. I wouldn't know where that is. have to ask Philippe next time. You never actually own a Defender. Which radio is it? All you'd need is two DIN round radio keys and un-plug the rear plug. The radio code should be stapled or be somewhere in your vehicle handbook. No Guts, No Glory.

When I removed mine there was enough slack in the loom to slide the radio forward and remove the centre dash without even unplugging it.

Clarion DB568RUSB.
Has a removable front, also have a pair of metallic keys which presume are those DIN keys. But after removing the front I still cannot find any obvious openings in the unit left and right which accommodate these DIN keys  .

I have an older clarion head unit and when that has been fitted into the DIN slot, there is a light plastic bezel that clips around it and masks the holes. The remove it I need to pull out this bezel (very flimsy) thus revealing slots at either side for the release cath things.

That's the one, but think will leave the joy to change this minibulb to the dealer. For them probably 5 minutes altogether, and afraid I will damage something. Tks all advise. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

You certainly don't have to remove the dash, and you may not even have to remove the radio.
You can probably very carefully pop the switch forwards out of its aperture in the panel using a small screwdriver, or better still a pair of paperclips bent into hooks. If it won't come out this way (and it woudl be surprising if it didn't), then pull the radio out so that you can stick your hand in the radio slot and push the switch out from behind. It shouldn't be necessary to disconnect the radio unless you aftermarket unit has resulted in the harness becoming shortened. |

Tks for that suggestion, tried it, but it is not like that. I can without a problem pry off the front part of the switch, the part which you push in/out. But then behind it is the actual switch housing with on the left side in the back the mini light bulb visible. To replace it you have to access the rear part of the housing though.
And even if there is a part which gives a good grip for a pair of plyers to try to pull the damn thing out, it won't budge at all.... So seems access via the rear is the only option.  You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

At work on the bridge of the vessels I work on there are hundreds of miniature 'p' bulbs....The handiest tool for getting them out....... A kiddies drinking straw...Gives a firm tight grip when forced over the glass. Honest!!!! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
