ETC or no ETC
In the plan to acquire the 2.2 Puma, the top of the range has ABS and ETC but the entry level dont. I usually understand that any form of LSD or non standard open differential, will make a swap in to LSD, or like ARB lockers very difficult or impossible?

Has anyone installed a locker in the 2.2 yet?

i am asking because i do appreciate the ETC. but it is very likely i go the arb locker way, so i dont want to have to swap the whole axle

I may be wrong Embarassed but ETC is only on the front axle, therefore you could put a locker on the rear with no problem.

dont see a problem there

ETC activates when there is a speed difference between left and right wheel on the axle (both front and back btw)

With a full locker engaged there is no speed difference so that axle will not activate the etc

Eg rear ARB, the ETC will only engage on the front axle (eventually blowing the 2pin front diff but that is another story)

With ATB (torsen LSD's) diffs the ETC will engage much less and if then it is supporting the functionality of the ATB's. So it is a benefit having ETC.

see also my topic here in the video's the difference with and without ETC is visible.http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic13545.html

Even with ETC it is a 5 euro, 10 minute job to fab a switch in line with the ETC/ABS fuse so you can manualy switch off both systems where advantageous, eg sand and sliding mud slopes. Personally i would even route this over a relay activated together with the ARB signal, so if you switch on the ARB, the ETC is automatically disabled (as on G-wagons where ESP and ABS are disabled)

Note also ETC does not work going backwards.

The benefits of having ETC and ABS in everyday situations are a no-brainer to me, for my type of driving.
Also consider resale value in your decision.

2 cents only

can you confirm that the ETC compnents are only in the front axle? abs is definitely in 4 wheels, else you cant call it abs.

because my current ride uses dana44 which there are a bunch of lockers available, but my understanding, usually with thinks like factory installed lsd or any form of esp or etc or such, its some how all linked up, and you cant really like plug out the carrier and swap in the arb carrier in the axle, there are other stuff and sensors etc that may not work or get in the way?

abs, etc, and all the crap if I am getting a salon, but hey, I dont get a defender to be on the tarmac, i would want to go front and rear locker in the end if possible. Anybody here fits lockers, i dont think its not common?

I would have thought all the axles are the same etc or not, the only differances being mountings for the wheels speed sensors.

afaik etc simply uses the ABS brake modulator to brake the spinning wheels, there shold be no differances in the diffs etc.
