strange noise from the front when towing
just back from a 7 hour round trip to Cookstown Caravans in Tyrone where I had a load of warranty work done.

I've noticed that when pulling off whilst towing if there aren't sufficient revs or if you're pulling off uphill theres a momentary clanky rattle from the front. This also happens if you change down to too high a gear while going slowly (eg second where first would have been wiser).

The noise sounds like its coming from the front diff or maybe half shafts (or maybe its the gearbox) and it feels like something is being laboured momentarilly and just rattles in a clanky sort of way. It only happens when towing (about 1500kg) and only occurs in 1st and 2nd gear.

Has anyone experienced this and is anything wrong ? Thanks

Hi Rossy,

Yes mine makes strange noises as well, first gear, no accelerator just moving slowly across a field etc. I thought it was backlash in the transfer box, but there's so much back lash everywhere, it could be anywhere!

Hi Rossy,

Mine is exactly the same. It can even do it if you labour the engine when pulling away in second too.

It clears once the revs are sufficiently high enough though.

It does make you cringe a bit when you hear it, but I guess its one of those many Land Rover traits. Laughing

I can't recall my 2.4 making the same noise but it does sound as though it is coming from the transmission rather than the engine.
