Hi All,
I hope this isn't too daft a question, but how do I tell if my 90 County Hard Top has ABS and Traction Control? There are no switches to be able to turn T/C off - does this mean I haven't got it, or simply that it can't be disabled? I read an article in LRO which mentioned that the TDCI's all had ABS/TC, however Land Rover's info suggests it's an option? Is the easiest way for me to ring Land Rover with my details and ask them, or is there an easier way of finding out? Thanks, Nick |

you could try braking on a surface like wet grass or mud, or accelerating on the same,
I regularly use a farm track near me for ease of acess and if it's dry and I take the sweeping bend too quick I get the Boingy noise from the pedal box ? Which is the TC ? And no it can't be switched off, it could probably be overwritten inside the vehs EMS but I can't see why any one would want to do this ? Hope that helps? DEFENDER XS CSW 08 TONGA GREEN |

It will have ABS. Find an empty road, get up to the speed limit and stand on the brakes, you should skid very little if at all and come to quick halt. If you didn't have ABS you'd skid to a halt.
If your 90 is a County or an XS it should have TC i think. It may even be that standard spec have TC too. As suggested, find some mud and accelerate on it. You will hear a chattery noise from the front end, a twitching on the throttle peddle and see the TC light come on on the dash. Hope this helps. |

As Sonic says. Option but standard on XS.
Easy to test on wet grass or mud. Easy to spot under the bonnet. Talk to your dealer if in doubt. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

A somewhat cryptic reply Andrew...
I had been of the belief rightly or wrongly that spinning wheels was a good way to wear out a diff and that therefore that TC would alleviate that. Can you elaborate? Mahn '08 Defender 110 ex '95 Disco 300 Tdi www.aulro.com |

Yes spinning means wear but when traction controll cuts in it uses the brakes to reduce the spinning so you get must higher torque to the wheel with traction and so you put bigger forces over the diff.
On a TD5 you can switch off traction control temporary by pressing the brake pedal 10 ? times in very quickly. I am not sure that works in a Puma. But it activates automaticely when you go above 7 km/hr. Simples You drive into mud/snow, you apply the gas (not to much) enough to get through, the wheels start spinning, the TC applies the brakes, bang goes the diff.
Obviously if the diffs were strong enough in the first place this would not be a problem would it Mr Land Rover. |

how do you disengage TC/ABS... do you pull the fuse or did you install a switch in between? Any issues so far.. other that the ABS/TC light turns on.? Surely the TC only kicks in when the wheels are spinning at different speeds, not when they're generally spinning. The TC isn't going to brake both wheels at the same time is it? I assumed it didn't monitor differences between front and back. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

agreed, if you are driving through mud (hoofing it) Tc will not come on as it is designed to only happen at low speeds. With mine anything faster than a few mph and it doesn't engage, just spins till it slows right down- maybe it was a issue with TD5s? Glyn |

Yep . i quickly found out that our County didn't have ABS when I had to stamp on the brakes to avoid a collision last week and the wheels just locked up and left smoking rubber on the road. A real brown trouser moment I can tell you!. 1963 Series 2A truck cab 2008 110 SW |
