Help with steering wheel...
I have a new steering wheel for my Puma. The only problem is, I can't get the original one off the column. It seems to be stuck fast. No amount af tapping/whacking with a mallet will move it...

Any ideas/help would be much appreciated.

And yes, I've undone the bolt Very Happy

Mine was a bit stuck on, so with the nut partly undone(but with enough to allow the wheel to move), I hit the wheel at opposite corners from on top and from behind and eventually it popped off. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Another pair of hands to use hammer while you pull back with both hands, just be aware that when it comes off, not to hit yourself in the face with it ! Surprised Big Cry
Some WD40 or similair left to soak in will also help.

Puma or earlier ?

Pre puma there are two holes, one either side of the large nut, that you can use a puller on. On my 2009 the holes are there but not the threaded section for the puller.

When I changed my wheel I asked the dealer if there was a specific puller for Puma's and there is but they said it should come off without a puller. Mine did, it almost fell off Laughing

Try this. Put the large nut back on losely, the wheel may make an unexpected bid for freedom !
Gently tap the wheel from behind all the way round. Also try rocking the wheel from side to side.

just made a puller for mine (puma)
1 piece 5/6mm steel bar drill 2 6.5mm same spacing as in steering wheel.
2 m6x1.0pitchx25mm set screws put sets through holes in bar thread in to steering wheel,couple of turns with spanner and off she pops.
this is after the big nut has been removed. 110 xs s/wagon

Put the nut on a couple of threads and hit each side of the wheel with your fists quickly. It will eventually come off, I've always done it that way as its quicker than finding a puller!

There have been two different steering wheels used post 2007; the one that looks like it ought to have an airbag (it has a strange bulbous growth in the middle), and a flat one without the growth.

The bulbous one is (I believe) equipped with holes for a puller, the flat one is not.

Either should come off without the use of a puller, but as written above it is very important to leave the nut on a few threads when pulling it off or you will whack yourself in the face.

I made a very crude 'puller' for my Puma after virtually hanging off my old steering wheel with no result.

Its VERY basic but did the job in 30 seconds.

If you have the two threaded bolt holes in your current steering wheel I would be happy to post it to you, if you promise to post it back! Laughing
