Painting Defender chassis
I've started to attack the rust/chassis on the Landy so I started with an angle grinder and wire wheel, removed what I could of the rust, degreased and then used some Jenolite to treat the rust.
Once done I then applied some Zinc 182 primer and left it to dry for 4 hours.


Painted the primer with some Chassis Black. As the weather was rather warm the paint was drying almost as soon as it was on the chassis.

Do I leave the chassis as it is or give it a covering of stone chip in the areas where mud will gather i.e rear x-member, outriggers? or leave as it is? 1999 Defender TD5 110

top job give it a coat of wax oil now or as you said stone chip as that will protect the paint Thumbs Up

I think before I give it a covering, I will give it time to 'go off'

Tonight, I cleaned up, treated and primed from the rear trailing arm mount, to the front trailing arm mount (on the outside) tomorrow, I will paint it.
As long as the weather keeps up I will keep cleaning, treating, priming and painting. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Thats all I can do given I am working during the week, So each night, clean up, treat and prime. Then next night paint up. 1999 Defender TD5 110

When I painted mine I put duct tape over the side holes in the chassis to stop water getting in, the I painted over the tape.If you want to wax oil inside the chassis do that before you put the tape over the holes. I did not wax oil over my paint. It is easy to clean and you can touch up if necessary. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Great job! I would squirt loads of Dinitro Cavity Wax inside the box section as well if I were you...

I used about 6 cans I believe but also did the pillars & bulkhead and all the outriggers... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Dinitrol cavity wax is a must.

Good idea bunging up the holes with tape.

The next question is, how to remove the buildup of crap that has gathered inside the box section??
Using a hose pipe and flooding with water is not a good move. Hoovering the chassis? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Not sure how much crap will be inside it but you could get a "bottle brush". It is a long flixible wire handle with bristles on the end. You could insert this had hopefully push the dislodged stuff towards the holes then suck it out with the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner.Personally I do not think there will be much in there-unless you have been deep wading or in heavy clag off roading. If it is a Puma do not forget to use lots of tape to seal up where the cables enter the chassis at the back wheel. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Its not a Puma, its a TD5. With a long enough brush could I get front to back in the chassis?

I know there is some crud in there, the previous owner used it for crop/farm/land checking (Gov agency in Sand Hutton, York)

Primer dried last night and over night and all day while in work. So tonight it got a coat of chassis black.

Now I am up to the metal work around the front outrigger and mud flap mounting area. 1999 Defender TD5 110

You would just insert the brush through the holes and hopefully poke about that way. The only surefire way to access the inside of the chassis is to cut a square out of it and insert the vacuum cleaner hose to suck it clean, then plate over the gap with a slightly bigger piece of plating iron. It is drastic but if you want to go that way it will do your chassis no harm if done correctly. Fine job by the looks of things so far. Personally I would not cover the painted surface with a coating like Waxoil. I would leave it. Using a brush puts on a good thickness and will last years. You can clean it with warm water and washing up liquid and a paint brush then hosing down with a garden hose. You can apply a layer of gloss paint in the future to freshen it up. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I will have a look over the weekend and see what I can come up with. I don't really want to cut holes in the chassis.

Its coming along slowly, I would have like a smoother finish, but to do that would require a smooth chassis!
The paint is going on neat rather than thinning down with thinners. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Best way as it will have a really good depth.Did a similar job myself.

Just the section from the front outrigger to the front of the chassis to do.

Oh and I decided to poke some rust and then it went into a hole Sad
The issue being apart from having to fix it, is the location.... Its where the chassis rail meets the rear x-member.
Thats a Job for tomorrow assuming its not raining. 1999 Defender TD5 110
