BP Ultimate every 4th tank? And for the other 3 tanks I presume you use regular diesel, but branded (BP of course in your case ), not supermarket stuff I presume. Any particular reason for that? Would using BP Ultimate continuously just be overkill, or are there different reasons for this alternating? The price difference alone between regular BP diesel and BP Ultimate diesel here in Switzerland is relatively small, equivalent to 4p/ltr... You never actually own a Defender. Every 4th tank ensures the fuel system is cleaned, and 300-400ml 2SO in every tank. A work mate who has used ultimate only on his VW for 18 months (and relatively low mileage) has had all 4 injectors replaced and various other fuel related problems. Another thing to watch is that only buy premium fuels from garages that sell alot of it - ie don't buy diesel of any type that has been in the underground tanks for a long time. |

Tried BP Ultimate in my 08 Puma 110 at 6000 miles as a mid service clean out
LR assist called out before I finished the tankful EGR valve had to be replaced as caked in carbon Might just have been a coincidence but put me of using it |

300 -400?
I put in about 250 per fill up which is usually about 45 litres. Am I putting in too little? BM52 |

And then this comment quote Every 4th tank ensures the fuel system is cleaned, and 300-400ml 2SO in every tank. A work mate who has used ultimate only on his VW for 18 months (and relatively low mileage) has had all 4 injectors replaced and various other fuel related problems. quote So this all leads toward the conclusion that BP Ultimate can cause serious damage to your motor Back to the regular supermarket stuff I guess. At least I never had a problem with those You never actually own a Defender. Do they ? Here in Portugal, there are only two refineries...From Galp (the portuguese oil company) that supplies all brands present in our market... Themselves, BP, Repsol, and all the "white line" brands as the ones from the supermarkets... Diesel and petrol don't come from abroad, it's all made here... How do we know they add that stuff ? Where do they add it ? Or they add that stuff once the trucks are loaded and ready to go to gas stations ? At the refienries here there are long lines of trucks waiting to be filled up, and they don't have diferent fuel lines for diesel with a certain type of additives depending on the brand ... All trucks get filled up at the same line. I say it's all the same... Some companies have made tests and found no diference in fuel! I've used ultimate diesel sometimes and never noticed any diference. I use Diesel from a french supermarket too (Auchan - here it's called Jumbo) because it's 10 cents cheaper. I've used it in my previous Td5 (for at least during it's last 50k km) and I use it now in my 110 Tdci ( with 23k km now) ... Never had a problem! Been using 2SO for 6 months now, and is making a diference - much smoother - but fuel economy is none... I'd be really interested to know what logic or evidence supports that. Pete |

On the plus side LR Assist gave me a Jaguar XF as a replacement car, caused a few looks on the Tunnelling Construction site though
I have used Miller Ecomax since and it seems to make a difference, smoother but no difference in MPG |

Pete, I'm not saying it's right or wrong, it's just what I do. I don't want the expense of ultimate all the time but I can see a benefit of running it though every 4th tank. |

OK, fair enough. I thought that maybe you had some privileged 'insider information' on the formulation of Ultimate, and that had led you to your particular fuelling regime. Pete |

To add to the conversation I've noticed a difference in performance (or lack of it) when using Sainsbury's City Diesel. Dunno what specifically they put in it / do to it, but it supposedly is better for something or other on the urban cycle. Unfortunately it is the only diesel my Sainsbury's sell, so if I get fuel there (slightly cheaper than branded but not mega cheap) then that is what I gets!
Thing is, whilst using it for 3 weeks in a row (ie. the whole tank of fuel has been replaced a couple of times, rather than having a mix of brands) I have noticed my mpg improves a small smidgin, but the power is down and it feels sluggish and 'hard work' to drive and is rattly. I had about a 3rd of a tank of Sainsbury's City Diesel left in when I filled up at Texaco this week and immediately noticed the power has returned. Feels like 'my car' again, quieter, more responsive.... |

I believe that bio diesel type and percentage has a big influence. It is just one big tax dodge so not likely to be good for customers. My previous post: I do the same journey Chester to Broadhaven (Pembrokeshire) and return every 3 weeks or so, mostly late in the evening so little congestion, (184miles & 4hours of hard driving) BP Ultimate give 10% improvement in mpg and smoother drive, but what is really noticeable is the difference between Tesco stations, the one in Haverfordwest seems to deliver a smoother drive compared to up north Tescos, but no change in mpg. It is not only the effect of the additives but also the % biodiesel that I believe effects the smoothness of the drive. Richard 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper |
