There is no road legal way of fitting an LED bulb into a halogen fitting although of course it can be done.
Road legal options are find and repair the problem or replace with a set of LED sidelights which will be more expensive. |

Trevor - you've not been on the site for ages!
You say sidelight - I've run LED sidelights for years, bought some from www.ultraleds.co.uk, they are the same size as a standard bulb. pass MOT each time with no problems. With a normal "filament" bulb, the polatity does not matter, LEDS need to be fitted the correct way around, I've not had a problem but you "may" need to swap the connections around. I paid about £12 for a pair but that was 3-4 years ago |

Yes, I'm aware of that but didn't pick you up on it as you are an 'expert' on lighting. The point I was trying to make was that the sidelights can be replaced by LED without compromising the legality - there is no need to replace the complete unit for a more expensive item is there? The OE lamp was homologated with a specified incandescent light source. Once you change the source you need to re homologate the lamp with the new light source to ensure it complies with ECE regulations. In addition to this the LED light source would need to be homologated to ECE R10. As the OP’s vehicle has been type approved by Land Rover there is no requirement to buy a more expensive part, only a part that is homologated for use within the ECE. |

Thanks for confirming that Tim - I thought that was the case but its helpful to get it confirmed. John http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk 2011 Tdci 110 CSW XS |

I used the terms bulb, halogen etc. as generic references that people would easily relate to as it gets complex quickly, I am not a lighting expert but have the luxury of being able to refer to some as and when required!
There may be cases where say if you had an older Series Land Rover you could legitimately put LED bulbs in as the regulations applicable may allow it as long as it conformed to the relevant C & U. |

Ok, I'm confused again now - so are you sying that you can't fit LED lamps (bulbs) in to standard Defender sidelights unless the LED is homologated for ECE use? Or does the LED have to be homologated to work with the Defender sifelight unit as well? John

The LED has to be homologated for ECE use + the lens you are using it behind also has to be homologated for ECE use with an LED source.

The Defender lens is only approved for use with a particular incandescent source, so the use of anything other than this makes the approval invalid.

Thank you to everyone for the advice given in the messages above.
So, from what you have said, my understanding is that the current design of white sidelight plastic lens is ECE approved only for use in front of an appropriate ECE approved traditional filament bulb which complies with the requirements of the Lighting Regulations (1989 I think). I suspect these regs know nothing of LED light sources. Am I further to understand that it is part of the MoT test procedure that the Inspector checks that the sidelight complies with all ECE regulations, or, merely complies with the Lighting Regulations requirements, or, are both bound together such as to be one and the same thing? I did just wonder whether the ECE approval issues of the lens and the light source behind it were a manufacturing issue for Land Rover, so that the whole vehicle gains approval, and not a subsequent issue for owners or MoT Inspectors - but maybe not. I suspect the average MoT Inspector sees a white light of about the right brightness and thinks "OK", whatever the light source or ECE technicalities. Thanks. Trevor Wright '08 90 TDCi/TD4 XS SW |
