Heat safe mode
Do the MY11 Puma's go into a safe mode where they back off on power for a short while until cooler then return to normal?
A mate of mine is continually feeling that his Puma is under powered especially when driving in hot conditions. I have not experienced this in my Puma which is the same model.

Does anyone know a solution to this? Land Rover say there is nothing wrong?

Thank you.

If mine gets too hot it does this and caugth me out a month ago or so. I now monitor the temp and have an alarm to let me know when it goes over 100.

I dont understand how it does it though as I have towed a heavy off road caravan in temps above 40deg C with head winds for hours and have never had this problem.
I also have a UG and temp has not been over around 96degs yet.

Could it be related to driving style?

Bruce, another chap in KZN who resides in a hilly area has had that issue for 2-3 years. LR tried numerous things but eventually he took the plunge and fitted a bigger intercooler and reported that the problem went away.

The ECU will cut power if it sees the temp climbing to prevent damage. --

I know, right? I'm not sure about this, maybe it's something to do with the intercooler, some may be defective without LR realising it?

The owner who did this wrote a thread about it somewher. He monitored the inlet and outlet air temperature at the intercooler, realised that was the issue and then got a bigger one.

Something that LR did not even think about in the 2-3 years he took it back to stealer over and over.

I'm also thinking of putting a bigger intercooler in as soon as the warranty is over, along with doing a decat. Thumbs Up --

Bruce, as a first diagnosis, ask your mate to check the turbo hose, as per this thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic12314.html --

Now that does sound interesting, I wonder if that is why some folk get really good mpg and other don't?

Dare not ask how much a new bigger intercooler is?

Does the colder air going into the engine via induction really make that much difference to the engine temp????

It makes a huge difference to performance and engine temp.

It's not just that colder air in = colder air out, but also colder air = more dense air = more efficient combustion, so the engine has to work less hard for a given power output.

The Allisport one:

Designed to replace the original much smaller intercooler on the Land Rover Defender TD4 / TDCi / Puma 2.4 fitted with Air Conditioning. This intercooler is over twice the size of the original Land Rover item! This highly efficient product is designed and manufactured by AlliSport Ltd and comes ready to fit utilising the original pipe work and mounting brackets. Constructed using our ultra efficient vacuum brazed core design with internal "turbulators" to increase cooling capacity. CNC stamp cut for quality and consistency and fully TIG welded by hand all in house. The increased cooling capacity together with the appropriate electronic tuning can allow performance to be increased to over 170BHP with an improvement in fuel economy. Fuel economy increaces by, on average 10% with a reduction in cylinder head thermal stress. Thermal stress is actually reduced as the EGT or combustion temperature is reduced dramatically. In order to get the best from this upgrade the fuelling needs optimising to suit. We offer remapping/rechipping facilities depending on vehicle model year.

Very nice but I am sure we could get it made up locally for allot cheaper. I know a few guys who make them for race cars Naks so perhaps when you are ready?

Indeed, local is always better Thumbs Up

Btw, I found the post/thread from that chap in KZN: http://landyonline.co.za/landyforum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3242

Quote:
I had been battling with power loss problems in hot weather (above 30°C) with my 2008 Defender 110 SW, a problem quite a few defender owners experience. While it was still under warranty, Land rover checked and rechecked everything. I did a lot of research as well. We established that nothing was wrong with the vehicle – or rather everything was to Land rover spec.

The problem I experienced is that whenever the ambient temperature was above 30°C, the vehicle would not perform, maximum speed on anything more than level ground was no more than 105/110km and going up steep hills like town hill the vehicle would feel like it was being held back.

I eventually purchased a scan gauge, which is a device you can plug into the ECM socket and it allows you to read various engine parameters when you are driving. I was able to program it to read the engine air inlet temperature after the intercooler. With a lot of testing, I realised that whenever this temperature reached around 64°C, the engine power was cut. So when the weather was cool, my vehicle ran very well, but when it was hot it didn’t. After discussion with one of the Land rover service managers, I tried a through flow exhaust system, with the idea being to cool the exhaust gas temperatures, and this made a small improvement.

However I had to drive to the Cape over Christmas and found the afternoon temperatures of 40°C in the Karoo really sucked all the power out. So I eventually took the plunge and bought a new intercooler from Paddock spares – it was a Britpart unit and after delivery charges and duty cost me R7,500. I fitted it a few weeks ago, and what a difference. Before, with the OEM intercooler, the difference in temperature between ambient air temperature and air inlet temperature when using full power was between 35 and 38 °C. with this intercooler the maximum temperature difference that I have measured is 18°C.

I have a test route where I measured performance, and last week when it was pretty hot (34°C), I did a couple of tests. Previously under those conditions my average speed was 102kph (this without a roof rack). After fitting the intercooler my average speed with a roof rack fitted was 112kph, a 10kph difference. This is a big difference.
