You can mount the surface mounted items anywhere within reason. If you are looking to hold things to the floor I would probably put them on the floor close to each side.
The carpet won't be deep enough to mount the recessed version, you woukld need to cut the wheel box too. The surface mount will mount over carpet without any major drama's. 2002 Defender 110 DC |

Many thanks. Out of curiosity, how does one screw the nuts onto the bolts ? Does the floorboard easily lift up or do I have to crawl underneath ? |

Either use rivnuts which may require a special tool to fit, or crawl underneath and have a helper hold the the other end.

Use either a rivnut or alternatively get an allen key jammed against wheel arch and then crawl underneath.
Cargo tracking is good IF you know EXACTLY where you want your load rings consider these £14 for the two short pieces of track, backing plates etc and two load rings Brendan Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated |

I would also consider putting something under the floor to spread the load depending on what you are tying down ?
