Bumper treatment Galv/Powder Coating?
More questions! Hope you all don't mind my constant querying, if anyone needs to know any thing about deer, guns, or quad bikes let me know!


I would like to galv or powder coat the new bull bars and existing bumper. Does anyone know where to get it done, if its possible and a rough price? I have in my head it's very expensive, but not sure. The other option is re-applying the plastic coating, but I don't know what it actually is.

I think you might have the different processes a bit mixed up. Shot or bead blasting is used to de-rust and /or strip off old coatings, whilst galvanising is a protective coating that you'd have applied afterwards. You can also get it powder coated (plastic coated), which gives a coloured coating. You can have the powder coating applied over a galv coating, but the finish will depend on how good the galv coating is.

I've just had some tubular side steps galvanised (for free as it happens) and I've now taken them and some other galv bits to be powder coated. I'm not sure about your part of the world (United Kingdom doesn't give much away Rolling Eyes ) but the company I've found here in Berkshire has a minimum charge of £45. Darren

You can buy galv bumpers, the one on my 300tdi cost £30 from Paddocks....

Do you mind telling me who you used in Barkshire to do your galvanizing? I live in Twyford, just east of Reading so hopefully your contact isn't too far away.

Swallow Spray Services in Windsor. Can't vouch for their quality as I haven't collected the finished work yet, but they were helpful enough. Darren

I would just go for PC on its own get them to pre heat the bumper as you get a better coating my winch bumper was £45 with some other bits my tree sliders are Galv and Pc but I dosent stick to it and is peeling off.

To be honest, my experience of plastic coated stuff is that it's a limited life finish that's then a sod to repair. The slightest nick or imperfection and water gets under it, rusts the metal and it starts to peel off. The only powder coated thing I've ever owned that didn't do that was a Safety Devices roof rack and I believe that was zinc coated underneath.

The tubular side steps and NAS step that came with my 110 were both in a shocking state and the latter was only two years old, which was why I decided to have the side steps galvanised first. The folks doing the powder coating tell me that there's a wash of some sort that they do first that helps the powder coating stick to the galv. Darren

I wouldn't touch powder coating. One pin hole to let the water in and it's finished. You'd need to galvanise it first anyway.

No. But they usually have a minimum charge of say £50 and then a per kilo price over and above that (say 20 pence a kilo). Obviously there will be bulk discounts for larger objects. So if you only have small stuff then worth asking around your local area engineering wsorks to see if anyone has a batch going in which you can add your bumper to and negotiate a price with them. Otherwise, unless you are sending a chassis and a bulkhead together you are unlikely to be sending enough weight to cover the min charge and so can reckon on this being your cost for the job. It is really not that expensive for the peace of mind I find. On my rebuild I have had every iron-based component sent to the galveniser.

I am also learning this - rather more rapidly (and on more parts) than I'd like Rolling Eyes Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...
