Mainly holding panelling I would imagine. You can remove them without any problems but I wouldn't keep them removed. After all there would be no purpose to remove them and they serve a purpose of being there in the first place. I had to remove two on the rear offside as are fixings for the LR genuine ladder.

thanks for the pic Sparkylee- I think I've now realised that these Paddocks things aren't meant for 7 seat Pumas as those bolts that are in the way have something do do with forward facing 7 seat arrangement (strange - they seem a long way from the seats - maybe tub reinforcement ?
But I'm getting them on somehow as its too much of a Palava to send them back from here so spacers and longer M8 bolts it is ! Er Zag I should have read the rest of the other thread as its answered the question I wouldn't mind but reading that is what made me order them in the first place |

My 110 TD5 has those Torx head bolts in the way and that had side facing seats in as standard. I took one lot out and none of the fixings for the seats got anyway near the cross member. It seems to be a peculiarity for 110's that have station wagon bodies. I ended up spacing mine out in the finish, damned awkward to get the nuts to the bolts inside the X member though, have a look at the aforementioned thread for ideas

They are the bolts holding the mounting frame for rear seatbelt, therefore they shouldn't be left out

on my 90 the 2 torx bolts at the end of the rear cross member (2 each side 4 in total ) hold the NAS style rear step/tow bar which was not fitted and a bracket on the other side, they have nuts on the other side of the cross member, there is a pair of anti crush spacers in the cross member that become loose when the bolts are removed, I removed one bolt and inserted it from the other side of the cross member, then removed the other and insered that, I then used these same bolts to secure my bumperettes with the nuts on the outside but some makes use smaller bolts. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy Last edited by LR90XS2011 on 24th Mar 2012 5:04pm. Edited 2 times in total |

As already mentioned those bolts are for the reinforcement chassis frame for the seat belts for the rear forward facing seats in the 90 and 110 7 seater station wagons. DO NOT remove unless you intend removing those rear forward facing seats. I just had some 10mm thick spacers made up. Worked a treat.

neat looking installation Welshgas. When I did a search before posting I remember you said that not being able to fit the fourth bolt wasn't an issue. I'm guessing you had to go to a metal fabricator/merchant to get the spacers made up ?

Do the Safari Equip or Terrafirma ones suffer the same problem?

Click image to enlarge finally fitted mine today thanks to all the good advice and tips from you guys. Thanks a million ! firstly I had to get 2 spacers cut 40mm x 45mm from 10mm flat steel bar at a local metal fabricators which cost the princely sum of € 2 ! Didn't bother with four as it tapers in so slightly its not really noticable. Then I had to drill 2 x 8mm holes in each - easier said than done. After a load of wrecked drill bits I realised that heat was the problem so I borrowed a plant trough from the missus and covered the spacers with water. Drilling underwater made the job a cinch. Putting them on was (as reported by everyone) a total ball breaker of a job. I really wanted to get all four nuts on each so had to use blu tac to hold the nut behind the hole in the top right corner while I offered up the bumperette ,bolt and spacer while holding the nut steady with my finger - there is hardly any room behind the crossmember I wasn't even going to bother with them but the back corners are quite exposed. But now if a poor old dear in Tescos car park decides to reverse into me her Micra will barely scratch the paint Horrid job but its done now. Ah well, girls, beauty hurts ! |
