its just difficult to fix as the only thing is the panel and you dont want to be drilling through that what about a custom made bar/ tube which comes up from the floor of the arch bolted from underneath with a thread halfway up in line with the center hole of the wheel ready for fixing

Best idea would be to lay it down on the floor and make a raised floor panel to cover it, that way you would loose the minimum of cargo space. Richard

Just a thought, how likely is it you will get a puncture especially with a Defender tyre! I took the spare out of the back of my 109 to give more space and reduce weight and rarely carried spares in some of the old classics I had (more boot space!) and carried some of that stuff you squirt inside that tyre fitters hate (meant to ruin it!). I've only ever had two punctures
As Cradgebank says laying it down flat would be the way to go |

Zag your right I was thinking the same with the dog box in the pickup bit I've no room for wheel there
I rang nene overland for price on roof mounted wheel holder to match my rack and they recon about £150 ish. Bit steep for me especially as we all know I will get a flat in the rain on the side of M25 at rush hour and climbing on roof to get to spare sounds a bit dodgy, so i am waiting for a reply from Brendan on a swing arm that might fit with my ladders Fingers crossed he will find a suitable one It's good to be back from the dark side DC110 -2012 Black with black hood and black x-tech FFRR 4.2 vogue Renault traffic auto PT crusier convertible Laika x700 Motorhome |

Do you need a spare all the time? We know that tyres seem to last forever why not just get them filled with Puncture Seal http://www.punctureseal.com/ for general road use. Just carry a spare when you are likely to encounter a nasty gash, off road,or come to think of it on many of todays roads forget I said anything!

I asked the same question here a while ago when I was trying to find a nice location for a 2nd spare in my Utility. Yes the floor is an option and it is a heavy weight (approx 50kg wheel and tyre together) with low CoG - which incidentally is why I didn't want to put it on the roof rack along with my roof tent.
A nice strong bracket over the wheel box was another choice I considered but I couldn't find a supplier and lack the tools to fabricate somethig suitable myself.....it would have to be pretty sturdy because of the 50kg weight. You could get a double carrier for the rear - but if like me you have a ladder then that could be a problem So I ended up with my 2nd spare securely strapped (I use an octopus bungee) to a LR style dog/load guard. Mounted transversally with the tyre touching the wheel box on one side and a cheap caravan tyre wedge on the other to stop the 50kg from swinging around. This leaves enough room to get a double stack of wolf boxes in front. You can use the space behind the wheel for tools, spare oil etc. I figured that as a location for a second spare this was OK (ie I would not need to take all the kit out to get to the main spare), and it was low CoG too and ahead of the rear wheels. This solution worked well in my shake-down in the Pyrenees last year and will be what I will take to Morocco next year |

I reckon I must have one of the heaviest wheel & tyre combos available direct for LR and 50kg is a little off the mark.

I have new BFG MT KM2 255/85/R16 on a "wolf copy" disk and they are 40kg each. Next step will be LR original Alu. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufÃnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

I removed my wheel carrier straight away spare is inside the rear on my dog guard and especially since I now have oversized wheels and tyres pic of standard and oversize
