How long has your Gearbox and Transfer box lasted!
Going from feedback from a couple of previous threads it would be interesting to see how much of an issue there is with the TDCi gearbox and transfer box.

How long has your gearbox lasted and what type of use has it had?

As we now know, my gearbox/transfer box have now lasted 20,000 miles, it is the bit that joins them that gave up after 20K.

Clutch, about one every 6K so far Shocked

70% road use, 30% off road, some very heavy. No towing.

24k miles. No problems with gearbox/transfer box or clutch. 90% on road hi-speed if possible don't like to be last in queue, 10% gentle off-road. LANDYWATCH

58K miles all original except for the oil, no problems,

had a word with opie about gear box oil when I was doing the transfer box oil as Tbox is every 48K but Gbox is 120K say land rover, opie recommend gear box oil every 40K?

food for thought

Just under 40.000 miles, all on-road, infrequent long highway trips at 80mph, but main use is half city, half intercity. Gentle with the mechanics, but all original, gear- and transfer box, original clutch (has had the occasional light rattle at idle for a while, but that seems to have disappeared now. In two weeks time plan to change for the first time both gear- and transfer box oils (engine oil/filter every 4000miles), and also will change for the first time the diffs oils. Sofar all works a treat, touch wood will stay like that Thumbs Up You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Mine is only 8k and nothing but smooth. A friends '08 TD4 has come from Africa recently and that machine runs now at 125k with first gear/transfer boxes. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.

New transfer box at 4k although I'm not sure it was right from new. Took it in to LR with a nasty clattering after long distance and then coasting to junctions. Service manager assumed it was loose clutch plate fixings but then called me back later kept the car for a few days.
minimal off road before, lots since with no problems.

I wonder if it would be helpful to put the model (90/110 and body type) and even tyre size/type, so we could see if the relative weight of the vehicle or loading on the transmission affects owner's experience?

Anyway, my vital statistics:

2008 110 Utility 54,000 miles often heavily loaded. Daily driving, long road trips, off road use - all original

2009 110 Double Cab 24,000 miles use as above.

Both vehicles are usually shod with 285/75R16 BFG KM2 although they sometimes have 285/75R16 Mickey Thompson ATZ

Interestingly, my 2001 110 did a gearbox at 50,000 miles. That truck was driven 'unsympathetically' off-road though Whistle

regards

Ian

'07' plate DC, used daily including off-road, usually laden near GVW, coming up to 100k miles, on original gearbox and transfer box with no issues from either.

Several other driveline issues (front diff, rear halfshafts) and early-type clutch replaced with later type.
Main dealer did once advise I needed a new t-box due to backlash, but it was actually the front diff not the t-box, and I wonder how many other Puma 'gearbox' issues are in fact caused by other driveline components.

Overall I rate a good MT82 as the best Landrover gearbox since LR fitted synchro to 1st and 2nd gear; I'd certainly rather have an MT82 than an R380 any day.
