Always use first gear.I keep pressure on the gear stick to keep it to the left and get a smooth change in to second gear. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

spudfan (and all)

thanks, I'll try keeping pressure to the left for a smooth change. Up til now its either been a very slow change (almost like double clutching) or a slightly less than smooth change.

If some of you have been using 2nd it's no wonder some of you get through so many chutches Laughing I always use first after all if you need to pull out that quick is it a good idea anyway? Thumbs Up

I used to use 2nd in my TD5 but always use 1st in the TDCi. Think TDCi has lower first gear than TD5 so that makes no sense Confused Whistle

If you pull away on a very steep hill and take the usual time to change from 1st to 2nd look in your mirror and watch the car behind have to slow down before they run in the back of you Rolling Eyes

Rolling Eyes 1st of course... Just to get going, and smoothly (meaning slowly) change to 2nd once reaching 10 kph (6mph)... The gearbox is not made to pull away in 2nd. Doing so you invariably will be slipping the clutch more than is needed. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

this is part of the issue of running a utility vehicle that's capable of towing 3500kg as a daily / unladen drive.

2 nd's a tad to high but if you pull away with slip on the flat or slightly down hill its great, trying to get a flyer in a defenders wrong! 1st with higher tyres would be spot on i'm guessing.

with a caravan / car trailer / plant trailer etc the lowish first makes perfect sense, great for maneuvering and just list the clutch with no throttle and away you go.

You need to try drivin all day in low box like we did in Wales recently 3rd Low was low! 4-5-6 geting you up to 20 mph Thumbs Up

Clutch slipping = clutch wear and reduced life. Done on a regular basis won't last long I doubt Whistle

I always use first gear in my 110, unless I'm on a downhill but even then I find 2nd a touch too high. Thats with 235 tyres. I wonder if those who pull away in 2nd are in 90s with 205s on?

i will only use second if I'm on a down incline. I'm uncomfortable about not using first. I was taught to always use all the gears going up or down through the box.

I was taught to jump gears but I don't in the Defender it's risky and to be honest there often isn't point. I prefer to go through the gears.

Never used 2nd to start away, always do 1st to get in motion. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.
