Hi, my first post...I have a TD5 Defender 90, Special Vehicles built with roll-cage and some other stuff. It has ABS/TC
I have had it for 10 years, nearly since new, but over the last year the 3 Amigos have come on. I get them reset, but the garage tells me the error codes relate to the shuttle valve. I've found a link to a possible fix (http://www.landroverclubvi.com/abs-mod.html) or have found a compay that can do a unit swap for approx £200. My problem is how to get the modulator out of the car. Its in a very tight space between the brake servo and the wing/bulkhead. Is there any access holes to get to the rear nuts holding the unit in, and also the brake pipes that go into the modulator..? If anyone has removed the unit, I'd be very glad to know how you did it! Many thanks Simon |

I did mine a couple of weeks ago.
Masking tape the top and edge of the wing and it DOES come out. With patience and force |

GREENI,
What did you use to get to the two nuts on the rear of the modulator that hold it to the bracket..? Did you remove anything else to get to them.. Glad to hear you got it out though, it gives me some hope..! cheers Simon ps Just noticed in the workshop manual, it shows the modulator in the reverse position than mine - i.e. the inlet brake pipes and the 2 nuts securing the modulator to the bracket are at the front, not the rear as in mine. The electrical sockets are shown at the rear, but mine are at the front. Which way is yours..?[/img] |

I think I used an adjustable head ratchet, and a ratchet spanner, undoing it all was not really a problem.
The rearward brake pipes were tough to undo, an extensive Snap-On tool collection really helps. The hardest thing was getting it out of the hole Ooh yeah, removing the bonnet helps. |

Greeni,
Just to let you know I finally managed to swap my ABS unit. A real pig to get out, but loosening the peddle box, lots of masking tape on the wing and some very fine ratchet spanners I got it out. I got a replacement from the guy you told me about, so thanks for that tip. He is only a couple of miles from me, never knew he was there... Thanks again for your help, I'd never have done it without your help... cheers simon |

Simon, Greeni
Any chance of pointing me to the same place? My ABS modulator is coming out this week for testing at ECUTesting.com. Brake issues I've been having (link on the TD5 section) are still pointing at the modulator and I'm trying my best to avoid a huge replacement bill. Cheers. Tony |

Not yet, no. Have spoken to them with the symptoms and they say it sounds like the modulator is at fault. Next thing is to get it removed and sent to them - hopefully today or tomorrow.
Just waiting for them to say sorry, can't repair Thanks for the info - pm replied Tony |

I've done exactly the same, but ECU couldn't fix mine. After about 5-6 weeks of hunting for a second hand unit and being let down a couple of times by people selling units with the same fault I already have I've forked out the £1200 for a new one. Massively painful shelling it out but I want my truck back on the road as the mot has passed
Good luck with yours!!!! Strong people are harder to kill and generally more useful! |

I've got my fingers crossed but am already resigned to the big bill
If mine can't be fixed I'll no doubt go straight for a new one - really need the truck on the road and want the assurance it'll last a bit.... Tony |
