You're right dgardel - it would have cost all of 30p extra for the dealer to do it properly!

it's a shame they can't do it properly - but they did it for free and took me about an hour to re-fit

Well I went on the Mudrut trip and this is why I first enquired to LR about the breather pipe mod.

True to form the breather got blocked in temperatures of -20 to -40C across nothern Scandinavia and unable to breathe the oil was forced out of some seals - looks like from a shaft seal near the top front of the block (mind you difficult to tell as there is oil everywhere).

A lot of oil was lost with no symptoms - until we saw oil on the snow the next morning and checked the dip.

The breather pipe felt solid to the touch and when warmed with water a 1" slug of ice exited the air-box end of the pipe along with a load of smaller fragments.

Once cleared the oil leak stopped and 2000 mile return journey lost no further oil

I feel particularly annoyed about this episode as I got bad infor from LR - which unfortunately nobody could verify. Anyway got back OK. Truck going in on Saturday for Warranty fix and clean up.

The trip was fantastic. I shall post later some info and experiences so that others may benefit from my experiences

I would definitely go again this time of year - the scenery and photography are stunning. When I go back it will be for a good long while and I will focus on taking photos, staying in one spot for a few days until I've exhausted the photographic opportunity. Trouble is not sure when - Morocco next year, India year after.......

Quick update on truck - put into the dealers yeserday (Matford Exeter) and have left it with them for a full review - will update here as things progress. It was acknowledged that LR advice is that trucks after 732615 and fixed for 776667 is the formal advice - clearly this is incorrect as my truck is after 776667 range.....watch this space

I really don't see how LR think how it would be fixed without installing the in-line heater - cold air stays cold however you look at it.

Thought I'd update the forum......

Matford Exeter (LR dealership) have been really excellent in arguing my case - against it has to be said a reluctant LR corporate machine - and have secured the modification to the pipe and the remedial works.

Basically still unhappy with corporate LR and their management of technical issues....this was one that they tried to brush under the carpet in my opinion. Luckily we knew enough to know what to look for but others may not have been so lucky.

good news SteveS, I was chatting to Ian the other day about the installation. I noticed the breather heater was hot all the time, this is a waste of energy.

I noticed a small waterproof fuse holder with a 5amp fuse on the bulkhead, I've removed the fuse for warm weather and will install for the arctic trips only.

i explained to my dealers that I was off to Norway, it was going to be very cold, the truck was on warranty and it would be cheaper for them to fit this rather than recover me, give me a replacement truck and fix my truck - they thought about it for a day and LR gave them the go ahead. The dealership fitted it, and I finished off the fitting using convoluted trunking. there's not much to the install, just a couple of wires, a fuse and the unit that plugs into the breather. for the summer, i removed the 5amp fuse, but going back in for the trip

BTW- the heater is standard fitting in Scandinavia and Russian markets, but I think it must be fitted locally
