Heated Breather Modification LTB00196 for arctic regions
I'm off to Scandinavia in the New Year and given the very cold temperatures I did some checking to see if there are any specific issues with my truck. Somebody pointed me to technical bulletin LTB00196 which in its original form was for all vehicles chassis number 7A732615 onwards. However, on checking with Land Rover they said that this problem was cured from chassis number 7A776667 onwards.

Can anyone with access to the land rover system confirm if the information that I've been given by LR is correct - not that I don't trust LR, but I don't want to have problems at -30C.

The original bulletin covered Scandinavia and Russia. The kit P/N is LR012616 and fits to the Crankcase breather

I have contacted my local dealer today, so far they have not come across the problem. I have send the bulletin number in LTB00196 and they are now contacting LR Norway... fingers crossed

Quite an interesting problem this since it has been recently highlighted on the Mudrut Arctic trip. Where exactly does the end of the breather come out? Can it be relocated to avoid wet air getting in and freezing? or is the damp actually being vented by by the Puma engine?

the defender is tested to -40c

The breather pipe runs from the rocker cover (just behind the pasty warmer) to the back of the airbox unit.

From what I have read, the problem seems to occur due to the cold air in the airbox meets the warm air from the breather pipe, and ice forms - eventually blocking the breather and causing pressure in the engine.

D44 sell a heater kit to fix the problem in the form of an inline heater unit.

It's wired into the heater terminals, so the in-line breather heater is activated when the heater is on in the vehicle. (makes sense)


Just to add, I have a MY2010 Swiss 110 and it has not got the modification as standard.

Here is mine breather heater - it is consists of relay, cable and in-line heater itself. The heater itself is under the pipe unsulation - I marked the place.

Fitted as standard, 2010MY. I fitted pipe insulation on breather for additional confidence Wink

Also for cold climate you need to fill the gap under the bonnet, because breather is almost exactly facing that gap.

remove the breather and put a small K&N filter instead? As we have fresh engines they should breath heavy anyway so a small filter will be suitable.http://www.knfilters.co.uk/search/universal.aspx

thanks Denis, looks like a good idea to insulate the pipe too. Do you use the LR in-line heater or something else ? the LR fix wires the in-line-heater into the cabin heater electrics, so that the heater is on when the cabin fan/heater is running .. how have you wired yours ?

Heater was in place when I bought truck in 2010 from dealer, it is genuine LR and yes it is wired to cabin heater through relay on photo.

There were many Puma Defenders in Russia in 2007-2009 with oil off engine (sorry for my english Smile ) due to breather pipe. As far as I know no one was when idling - all on speed about 80 km/h and higher and cold conditions.

- must be fitted to Russian and Scandinavian models

do you know of any other changes on your model for cold climates ?

Yes I know! Now other changes! Laughing

Other small modifications are self-made:
1. self adhesive rubber sealant (for doors and windows) - on perimeter of bonnet
2. engine blanket - is merely put on all engine bay
3. radiator muff
thats enough for -30C - tested Thumbs Up
