Do these sealants work when it's wet?

Reason I ask is, I replaced my windscreen seal back in October, and it seems the water is quite happily leaking in through it. So if I get some of this screen sealer stuff, can I squeeze it in under both libs of the seal even though there is currently lots of water sitting behind there? I figure the only way to dry it out properly would be to remove the screen and then re-fit it with the sealant in place?

Definitely not a good idea to seal water in Shocked No easy answer to drying it out just the obvious, leave in dry garage, hot blowers/dryer, wait until summer or take window out which is a bit OTT Confused

Great thread - reason I just signed up to this site Very Happy .

My 4 month old, MY11, 90 has multiple leaks from various holes and seals on the front bulkhead. Hoping the dealer will sort... but have downloaded the ingress guide (talks about 12 seater so not Puma specific?) and am also gonna do all the stuff in the 'Zag Corrosion Guide ' as soon as things dry up a bit.

Thanks guys.

Alps, you will have to Google the Puma Water Ingress Guide, we did have it on here but the links are now not working Sad

Thanks Zagato, will do. Thanks for putting up that guide too - I knew I needed to do something but had no idea or structure of where to start or what to use etc - now I do so cheers!

Hi bp - I'm down near Grenoble and we've had loads of snow, the 90's been awesome. I bought a D3 a couple of years ago and its been perfect down here, like a mountain goat in the snow (after I put snow tyres on it but thats a different story). Only thing is, I always wanted a proper LR and although I love the D3 I still spent all my time wanting a Defender... So kept the D3 (awful trade-in offered) and bust the bank for the Defender - I can now sit in a deckchair and grin at the driveway all day Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up .

So back to water ingress... 2011 Defender 90 SW

Hi Zagato Smile

Not quite on topic, I admit, but I've got the day off and am blitzing the 110 with various anti-corrosion treatments.
I have noticed the "holes" in the bottom corners of the driver's and passenger's windows and my initial reaction was that the corners were drain areas. However, reading your guide I saw this pic:

and your comment about sealing the corners.
Do I understand correctly that all the corners should all be completely filled with sealant so there are no gaps for water to drop down?
Sorry if that's a daft question...

Cheers (as ever)
Matt

Hi Matt, this is just something I do, it's just my opinion and it won't stop water going down, just reduce it as there are other areas it can get in. It all helps IMHO. The factory thumb in a token bit of Dum Dum/Sealant on some but not all - it just helps to stop water pouring off the screen into the doors. Good news is that the door bottom design has been improved since the TD5 whilst also having a Zinc coating, AND I am sure I saw a wax residue of some sort in the door bottoms whilst on the factory visit - Yeah pump it in, can only do good Thumbs Up Have fun, you can make a neat sweeping "plug". I use "Sensitive, Non Fragranced, Baby Wet Wipes" to wipe the excess off Embarassed Laughing

Great - thanks Thumbs Up

I also noticed the odd "smear" of powdery black stuff here and there on some of the corners (also under the odd bit of windscreen rubber...)

I guess the message from LR is "Why bother? We don't" Rolling with laughter

Cheers

Agreed, don't want to seal the water in.

I doubt that it would dry out if left, as there is no airflow of any kind in there behind the seal so the water is just going to be sitting there for a while I'd imagine! The vehicle is also in daily use so taking it off the road to sit for a while is not an option. I will wait for a dry day and then pop the screen out and re-fit it dry with a load of sealant. Hopefully that will do the job Smile

Mine might be an old girl compared to you guys and your Pumas but it's still going to be dry inside Razz

Are there such things as "Defender years" - how many to one "Human year"?
