We just today completed changing ours on a 2003 model. Some previous forums posts claim it's a 15 minute job. Do not believe them (unless you're not a numpty, like we were)! Maybe it's easier with the pre-2002 ones, but it took us, in all, about 6 hours to do. We could definitely do it quicker on our next go, but just be prepared. Plus it was -10C here, which didn't help.

On the plus side it's not exactly very difficult (and I say that as a numpty). Just loads of screws and bits to do.

The quick brief:

Disconnect battery (remember 15 second rule after ignition).

Remove wiper arms. Haynes didn't tell us why we'd need to do that, so we didn't believe it. But you need them off as you're pushing the worm thing in on the motor. That will turn the wiper spindles. Might be possible to turn them with the arms on, but safer without. We immediately stumbled into trouble here. After undoing the bolts just under the arm cover, the arms still refused to come off! Loads of WD-40 and levering with plier handles eventually did the trick, but it was brutal... Actually this was the only troublesome bit.

Unscrew the bit on the end with the heater controls on the dash. Unscrew the top of the instrument panel (two screws). Remove the screws on the facia cover on the top by the windscreen. It lifts off. You'll need to undo the heater vents there too, I think. Unscrew all the screws for the top half of the facia (it's actually two parts, which I didn't before realise). The picture posted here shows the lower part taken off as well. There shouldn't be any need for that.

Take out the grab handle. One screw is hidden under the decal.

Remove the CD/Radio with one of those CD/Radio removal tool thingies (we were missing one of those, so be sure to have it!). Unscrew the console. At this point it's possible to wiggle the motor out from behind the facia, if you bend it out a bit. But we made our lives easier by also completely removing the center console (unplugging everything). Just make sure to label the cables.

Loosen the worm nut thing on the motor, from beneath the cover, remove the clips holding the motor, then completely undo worm nut. Motor should now pull out with the worm. When installing, make sure you keep the protecting pad on the back in place. It dropped out for us and we didn't immediately know what it was Smile

Label the screws, it makes life easier (we didn't...)!

England 2002 Defender 110 Td5 SW Coniston Green
I've had the dash out that many times on my 2002TD5 that many times that it only takes me 15/20mins(I'm sure I can do it in my sleep)

To take the wipers off I use a short length of 50x50mm timber, with some rag/cloth next to the paintwork. This I hold close to the spindle and making sure that it is not just resting on the vent flap, put an open ended spanner under the point where the arm meets the spindle so that the spanner straddles the spindle. Slide the timber up to the spindle with the spanner. Then using the spanner as a lever, the timber as a fulcrum and then a sharp rap with a hammer/another piece of timber and will pop off.

A 13mm spanner is all I use but a good tip is to use a large rag as the spanner can hit the bulkhead at speed as the arm pops off and also make sure you don't put any weight on the flaps as the hinge will bend and it's a Censored trying to straighten them up to stop the wind whistling through
