Got to work this morning, switched off and the EGR Self Cleaning bit was really loud and quite eratic.
Its continued to do this all day so I am now wondering what could be wrong. I can't say I have noticed any drop in performence. Its a 2009 110, done 23,500 miles and six months warranty left. Any ideas ??? Mick |

If I don't blank mine off eventually I might carry a spare so I can swap it if it ever packs up, they're only about £70

When it makes no noise on engine switch off it is not working. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Stick it into the dealers and get them to replace it, otherwise you will be paying to have it replaced when it is out of warranty.  |

Mine also did the same, I think if I rember correctly, the plastic gears that operate the flap tend to strip after some time and then the whole lot sounds like a bag of loose spanners.
My valve was replaced under warenty. Seems like they never bothered upgrading the EGR valve as mine was a 20007 build and your's is 2009 Puma 110 - gone

Booked it into the Dealers, the guy on the phone didn't know what an EGR Valve was but there again he wasn't a mechanic. When I took the vehicle in the guy at reception did know what an EGR valve was and said they would have a listen to it before replacing the valve as they can be a bit noisy. He then said a replacement would cost about £700.00?????? When I told him it was under warranty he said they would record the noise it made, play it back to Land Rover H Q and see what they say.
They replaced the valve under warranty and everything seems fine but £700.00? It's got to be a mistake or a very bad joke. Mick Clark. |

Get a BAS remap to keep the EGR closed. Your fuel consumption will improve and you won't have to worry about the EGR sticking again

The one thing to remember about using a remap with the EGR closed all the time is that it will eventually coke up. So theoretically if you only take the remap off for a dealer visit then there is a good chance the valve will eventually become stuck closed causing MIL and DTC issues. I have an Alive tuning remap with the EGR closed function and I find myself putting on the original OEM fuel map with the EGR working every month or so for a day to let the valve operate as normal, hopefully this will stave off any sticking issues once I am out of warranty and if I have to return the Puma to standard for whatever reason. The last thing I want is a faulty EGR throwing up issues when I am trying to diagnose another problem. Brian. |

Hmm, I also found that when I drove 6000km on an overlanding trip last year. Nowaways my Puma is visiting the dealer so frequently that the EGR doesn't have enough time to coke up  --

Thought they where about £100, shouldn't be too hard to replace yourself. I was going to keep a spare in the vehicle or do a re-map once the Warranty runs out but not so sure now from what Lorryman says, would save a few quid over the years though and be more reliable! |

The EGR closed function does benefit the engine in that it is using less fuel and the intake air is clean as it has no recycled exhaust gases. The reference to me putting the OEM fuel file back on monthly was to reduce the risk of the valve coking closed over a period of time of unuse.
Remember that Alive Tuning can do you an OEM fuel file that keeps the EGR closed 100% of the time, whilst changing no other parameters within the fuel file. I did a post about this here: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic10564.html Brian. |
